World leaders, business leaders, and prominent Nigerians gathered in New York for a night of tributes honouring former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his legacy.

According to the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on her X handle on Tuesday, the event, organised by the CEO of Mutandis Africa, Chinelo Anohu, featured tributes from former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

Also in attendance were businessman Aliko Dangote, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, Afreximbank President George Elombi, Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony Elumelu, and other prominent figures.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has disclosed that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given the authority to nominate key officials of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.In a new statement, the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate the Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesman, deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and other key officials.The party said the decision is part of efforts to build an inclusive and coordinated campaign structure as the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket prepares for the 2027 presidential contest.According to the NDC, a complete organogram of the proposed campaign structure was prepared in August and made available to Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for their input. The party said it has also developed a campaign timetable and is waiting for arrangements on campaign funding and fundraising to be concluded.The NDC further stated that campaign funds will be paid into the presidential campaign account and managed by officials nominated by the presidential candidate and his running mate, alongside the party’s National Treasurer. The party said this arrangement is intended to promote transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with its reporting obligations under Nigeria’s electoral laws.The announcement comes amid recent controversy surrounding a separate 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement. The NDC had distanced itself from that structure, while the movement maintained that it is an independent organisation.The latest statement from the NDC therefore provides further clarification on how the party intends to constitute its official presidential campaign machinery.The party has also appealed to its candidates and supporters at all levels to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on the 2027 elections. The NDC said there are no battles to fight within the party and identified the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as its common political opponent.The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, scheduling the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and the governorship and State House of Assembly elections for March 6, 2027.With the campaign season gathering momentum, attention is now turning to the people Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso will select for the key positions in their presidential campaign council, how the campaign will be funded, and how effectively the NDC will coordinate its nationwide mobilisation.What will the final Obi-Kwankwaso campaign team look like? According to police, the incident began on August 29, 2026, when Blessing was reported abducted along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway, prompting her family to pay a N3 million ransom for her release. However, she was not released despite the payment, leading the family to seek police intervention.Acting on credible intelligence, detectives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu tracked Blessing to a rented room in Asaba, Delta State, on the afternoon of September 18, 2026, where she was found unharmed and taken into custody. In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations indicate that Blessing allegedly conspired with a female associate identified as Onyinye and at least one male accomplice to fake the abduction and collect money from her family. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered further investigations to identify and apprehend the remaining co-conspirators.The arrest comes amid a series of high-profile anti-kidnapping operations in Anambra State. In the days leading up to this incident, the command reported the rescue of a 16-year-old boy in Onitsha and the arrest of seven suspects linked to kidnapping and armed robbery syndicates. These operations, carried out by specialised units including the IGP’s Violent Crime Response Unit and the RRS, reflect a broader intelligence-driven approach to tackling violent crime in the state.If charges are filed, Blessing and her alleged accomplices could face prosecution under Nigerian laws relating to fraud, conspiracy, and obtaining money by false pretences.
