Nigeria defender Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football after 16 years with the Super Falcons, bringing an accomplished chapter of her career to an end.
The experienced centre-back announced her decision on Friday, shortly after being part of the Super Falcons squad that fell short in their bid to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ohale described the decision as a difficult one after spending more than a decade representing Nigeria at the highest level.
In a heartfelt message announcing her retirement, the defender reflected on the significance of wearing the Nigerian jersey and the sacrifices, victories and difficult moments that shaped her international career.
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” she said.
Ohale leaves the Super Falcons with 86 international appearances, having represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.
Her international career also included seven appearances at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where she became part of a generation that continued Nigeria’s dominance of women’s football on the continent.
Among the biggest achievements of her career were five WAFCON titles, won in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024. Her latest continental triumph came at the tournament hosted in Morocco in 2025, following the competition’s rescheduling.
Ohale also produced memorable moments on the biggest stages. At the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, she scored Nigeria’s second goal in a thrilling 3-2 group-stage victory over co-hosts Australia.
Two years later, she again found the net in a major moment for the Super Falcons, scoring during Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final.
Those moments formed part of a career in which Ohale became one of the most experienced defenders in Super Falcons history. She made her senior international debut in 2010 and remained involved across different generations of the national team, working under several coaches during her time with Nigeria.
Her consistency and experience also saw her become a familiar figure at major international tournaments, particularly in a defensive position that demanded composure, physical strength and tactical discipline.
Despite the disappointment surrounding Nigeria’s latest failure to reach the Women’s World Cup, Ohale chose to look back on her international career with gratitude rather than regret.
She thanked her teammates, coaches, technical staff, family, friends, the Nigeria Football Federation and supporters who followed the Super Falcons throughout her time with the national team.
“To my teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends, Nigeria Football Federation and everyone who walked this journey with me, thank you. You became part of a chapter of my life that I will treasure forever,” she said.
She also paid tribute to Nigerian football fans for standing behind the team through both successful and difficult periods.
“To the Nigerian fans, thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special,” Ohale added.
The defender described representing Nigeria as the greatest achievement of her career, highlighting the privilege of serving her country rather than focusing solely on the trophies and personal milestones she collected along the way.
“But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country. The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart,” she said.
Although her international career has come to an end, Ohale remains active at club level. She currently plays for Mexican club Pachuca, having previously represented Houston Dash in the United States as well as clubs in Sweden and Spain, including Alavés.
Her retirement closes a 16-year chapter that included 86 international caps, four World Cup appearances, seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and five continental titles.
For the Super Falcons, Ohale’s departure represents the loss of another experienced player who has been part of the national team’s setup across multiple generations. For Ohale, however, her connection with Nigeria remains deeply personal.
She may no longer wear the Super Falcons jersey on the pitch, but her contribution to the national team has already secured her place among the experienced players who helped shape Nigeria’s women’s football story over the past decade and a half.
