Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship ended with an eighth-place finish after the national team suffered a straight-sets defeat to Ghana in the seventh-place playoff.
The result brought the Nigerian team’s campaign in Tunisia to an end after five matches, with the side recording two victories and three defeats during the continental championship.
Nigeria had started the tournament on a positive note, defeating Chad 3-0 in their opening match before producing another impressive performance against Algeria. The Nigerians came from behind twice to defeat Algeria 3-2 in a five-set thriller and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
Their quarter-final meeting with Morocco proved to be a major turning point. Nigeria won the opening set 25-20, but Morocco responded strongly to take the next two sets. The Nigerian side forced the match into a deciding set after winning the fourth 26-24, but Morocco eventually prevailed 15-12 to book a place in the semi-finals.
The quarter-final defeat moved Nigeria into the classification bracket, where they subsequently faced Rwanda. Nigeria lost that encounter 3-1 before Ghana completed their campaign with a straight-sets victory in the seventh-place playoff.
The eighth-place finish meant Nigeria missed out on the three African places available for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship. The tournament also carried major Olympic significance, with the African champion earning the continent’s berth for the men’s volleyball competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
At the top of the championship, hosts Tunisia celebrated another continental triumph after defeating Cameroon 3-0 in Friday’s final at the El Menzah Sports Palace in Tunis.
Tunisia controlled the final from the opening whistle, winning 25-22, 25-18 and 25-19 to complete an unbeaten run through the tournament and claim their 12th African championship title.
The victory also ended Tunisia’s wait for another Olympic appearance after the country missed the Paris 2024 Games. Their latest continental triumph secured the African quota for the men’s volleyball tournament at Los Angeles 2028.
Cameroon settled for the silver medal after reaching the final, while Morocco and Algeria contested the bronze-medal match for the remaining African qualification place for the 2027 World Championship. Cameroon had already secured World Championship qualification by reaching the final.
For Nigeria, the tournament offered valuable experience against some of the continent’s leading volleyball nations. Despite progressing from the group stage and reaching the last eight, the team could not convert its strong start into a place among the medal winners.
The Nigerian side will now turn its attention to future international assignments, with the performance in Tunisia providing both positives and areas for further development as the country continues its efforts to strengthen its position in African volleyball.
