A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt, Germany, to Lisbon, Portugal, was diverted to Lyon, France, after a passenger’s power bank caught fire midair.
The incident occurred on Saturday aboard an Airbus A321-200 carrying 198 passengers.
Lufthansa said the crew immediately secured the battery in a protective bag designed for lithium batteries. No passenger or crew member was injured.
The pilot subsequently decided to divert the flight to Lyon as a precaution, with the aircraft landing safely.
The passengers spent the night in a hotel before continuing their journey on Sunday.
“The safety of our passengers and crews remains Lufthansa’s top priority at all times,” a spokesperson for the airline said.
Lufthansa has banned the use and charging of external batteries on its aircraft since January, although passengers are allowed to carry up to two power banks in the cabin, subject to certain safety conditions.
