LONDON, ENGLAND — Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has defended Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka against criticism of his recent performances for England, insisting that the 25-year-old remains one of the national team’s most important attacking players.
Saka started both of England’s Nations League matches during the current international break against the Czech Republic and Spain but has faced increased scrutiny over his performances.
Cascarino, however, believes the criticism directed at the Arsenal star has been excessive, particularly given his recent return from injury and his strong start to the Premier League season.
Cascarino Backs Saka
Speaking to talkSPORT, Cascarino praised Saka’s overall contribution and argued that the winger should continue to start for England.
The former striker suggested that Saka’s recent difficulties should be viewed in the context of his return from injury rather than as evidence that he has lost his form or effectiveness.
Cascarino also pointed to Saka’s performances for Arsenal as evidence of his continuing importance.
The winger has reportedly scored three goals in his first three Premier League appearances of the season, a record that Cascarino believes demonstrates his current attacking quality.
Competition For England Places
Saka’s position in England’s starting lineup has come under discussion as Thomas Tuchel considers his attacking options.
England have several players capable of operating in wide or advanced attacking positions, including Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha.
The competition has prompted suggestions that Tuchel could alter his attacking lineup, particularly as England prepare for another Nations League fixture.
Cascarino, however, believes Saka deserves to retain his place on the right side of England’s attack.
He argued that the Arsenal winger remains an important asset for the national team despite the availability of other talented attacking players.
Arsenal Partnership
Cascarino also highlighted Saka’s relationship with Arsenal’s right-sided defenders as one factor behind his effectiveness.
The former Chelsea striker specifically referred to Ben White’s contribution to Saka’s performances on the flank.
White has been unavailable during the current international break because of injury, potentially affecting the combinations Saka has developed at club level.
Saka has established a strong understanding with Arsenal’s right-backs over several seasons, allowing him to combine wide positioning with movements into more advanced areas.
Saka Remains Key For England
Since establishing himself as England’s first-choice right winger, Saka has become a regular member of the national team’s starting lineup.
His workload has also been substantial because of his commitments with both Arsenal and England.
Cascarino’s defence comes amid growing debate over how Tuchel should balance England’s attacking options as the team prepares for major international competitions.
While acknowledging the quality of other England wingers, Cascarino maintained that Saka’s consistency, work rate and contribution at club level justify his continued selection.
England Prepare For Croatia
England are scheduled to face Croatia in their next Nations League fixture, with Saka expected to remain part of Tuchel’s plans.
The match provides another opportunity for the Arsenal winger to respond on the pitch to the criticism surrounding his recent international performances.
For Cascarino, however, the debate should not overshadow Saka’s wider contribution to both Arsenal and England.
The former Chelsea striker’s comments underline the contrasting views surrounding Saka’s current international form, with some questioning his recent performances while others continue to regard him as a key component of England’s attack.
