LeBron James began what is expected to be the final chapter of his remarkable NBA career with a defeat as the Philadelphia 76ers lost 114-108 to the Brooklyn Nets in a pre-season encounter on Thursday.

The 41-year-old made his first appearance for Philadelphia after joining the franchise in July, bringing more than two decades of experience to a team hoping to challenge for the NBA championship in the 2026/27 season.

Despite the defeat at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, James delivered an encouraging performance in the first half, recording 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and one steal in 18 minutes on the court.

His performance offered an early glimpse of the role he could play in Philadelphia’s revamped lineup as the team works to build chemistry ahead of the new campaign.

James, who described his move to Philadelphia as his final NBA contract, is preparing for a record-extending 24th season in a career that has established him as one of basketball’s most influential figures.

The four-time NBA champion joined the 76ers after spending the previous eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He had previously represented the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, winning championships with all three franchises.

His arrival in Philadelphia has raised expectations among supporters who hope his experience and leadership can help the team end its long wait for another NBA championship.

The 76ers last won the title in 1983, leaving the franchise with a 43-year championship drought heading into the new season.

Thursday’s pre-season meeting against Brooklyn provided an opportunity for Philadelphia’s new-look lineup to gain valuable playing time together.

James featured alongside fellow newcomers and established team-mates, including Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, as the team began testing its combinations against NBA opposition.

However, the Nets ultimately secured the victory, taking advantage of the opportunity to spoil James’ first outing in Philadelphia colours.

Despite the result, James remained positive about the team’s progress, acknowledging that the players would need time to understand one another and develop an effective playing relationship.

“We’re still trying to put each other in the position to be successful and complement each other the best way we can on the floor. But it’s going to take some time,” James said.

He described the contest as a useful opportunity for the team to learn from its performance and build towards the regular season.

“Tonight was a good sample size for us to build on,” he added.

James’ contribution was notable for his ability to create opportunities for his team-mates, even without taking many shots. He made his only field goal attempt while converting all eight of his free throws to finish with 10 points.

His passing and court vision remain important elements of his game, particularly as he adapts to a Philadelphia side featuring several established offensive players.

Brown led the scoring with 18 points, while the 76ers will look to improve their overall performance as the pre-season progresses.

For James, the move to Philadelphia represents another major transition late in an extraordinary career. Since entering the NBA in 2003, he has accumulated four championships, four NBA Finals Most Valuable Player awards and four regular-season Most Valuable Player honours.

He also remains the league’s all-time leading scorer, having consistently maintained an elite level of performance across more than two decades.

James has been selected for the NBA All-Star Game in each of the previous 22 seasons in which he was eligible, further underlining his remarkable longevity.

Although Thursday’s defeat offered no immediate reward, the contest marked an important first step in his latest basketball journey.

Philadelphia’s immediate priority will be to strengthen its understanding on the court before the regular season begins. The team will need to turn its individual talent into consistent performances if it hopes to compete with the strongest sides in the league.

James’ experience could prove valuable in that process, particularly as the 76ers seek to combine their established stars with new additions.

The team is scheduled to begin its regular-season campaign against the defending champions, the New York Knicks, on October 20.

As the new season approaches, attention will remain on whether James can help Philadelphia mount a serious championship challenge during what is expected to be his final NBA campaign.

For a player whose career has been defined by historic achievements and sustained excellence, the challenge now is to make his final chapter count.
