Barcelona continued their impressive start to the La Liga season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Getafe, as English forward Anthony Gordon announced himself with an early goal before Gabriel Jesus and Jules Koundé completed a commanding performance at Camp Nou.
Hansi Flick’s side returned from the international break determined to maintain their winning momentum, and they needed barely two minutes to make their intentions clear. Gordon struck early to give the hosts the advantage, while Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead in the 30th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake. Koundé then put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute, finishing off a move created by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
The victory strengthened Barcelona’s position at the top of La Liga and extended their perfect league record to eight wins from eight matches. More importantly, the performance demonstrated that the Catalan giants could continue producing results despite missing several influential players.
Barcelona started aggressively, pressing Getafe high up the pitch and refusing to allow the visitors sufficient time to settle into their defensive structure. The approach paid off almost immediately, with Gordon providing the breakthrough in the second minute.
The Englishman’s early strike gave Barcelona the perfect start and brought the home supporters to life. Having arrived at the club amid expectations that he would add pace, direct running and attacking quality, Gordon wasted little time making an impression. His goal was particularly significant because it was his first official goal for Barcelona.
Getafe were forced to abandon some of their initial caution as they attempted to recover from the early setback. However, Barcelona’s pressing and superior possession made it difficult for the visitors to establish a sustained attacking rhythm.
The hosts continued to control the tempo, moving the ball quickly and looking for openings between Getafe’s defensive lines. Lamine Yamal remained an important attacking outlet, while Barcelona’s midfield helped maintain pressure on the visitors and restricted their opportunities to launch counterattacks.
Getafe attempted to remain organised, but the pressure eventually produced another costly mistake.
Barcelona doubled their advantage in the 30th minute through Gabriel Jesus, who punished Getafe after an error during their attempt to play out from the back. The Brazilian striker capitalised on the defensive lapse and finished calmly to put Barcelona in a commanding position.
The goal reflected Barcelona’s ability to turn their pressing game into a direct attacking threat. Rather than allowing Getafe to build patiently, the hosts forced their opponents into uncomfortable situations and took advantage when the visitors failed to deal with the pressure.
At 2-0, Barcelona had established a comfortable cushion, while Getafe faced the difficult task of finding a way back into a match in which clear opportunities had been limited.
The visitors needed a response before the interval, but Barcelona continued to manage the contest with confidence. Their movement off the ball and quick passing helped keep Getafe chasing possession, leaving the home side firmly in control as the first half progressed.
Getafe returned for the second half needing an early goal to revive their hopes, but Barcelona showed little interest in allowing the contest to become unnecessarily complicated.
The Catalans remained disciplined in possession and continued searching for a third goal that would remove any lingering uncertainty. Their defensive organisation also limited Getafe’s ability to create dangerous situations around the penalty area.
Barcelona’s dominance was reflected in their possession, which reportedly reached approximately 82 per cent. The hosts also registered significantly more attempts and corners, underlining the difference between the two teams in their ability to control the game and apply sustained pressure.
Gordon’s contribution was an important part of that attacking display. His early goal helped Barcelona settle into the contest, while his movement gave the hosts another option in the final third. For a player seeking to establish himself in a team filled with attacking talent, scoring in such a convincing victory represented an encouraging milestone.
The match was effectively settled in the 73rd minute when Koundé scored Barcelona’s third goal. Yamal supplied the assist with a cross that allowed the French defender to finish and complete the scoring.
Yamal’s involvement once again highlighted his importance to Barcelona’s attacking structure. Despite his young age, the winger continues to demonstrate the vision and technical quality required to unlock organised defences. His contribution to Koundé’s goal provided another example of how Barcelona can create opportunities through intelligent movement and precise delivery.
Koundé’s finish ensured there would be no late comeback from Getafe. With a three-goal advantage, Barcelona were able to manage the closing stages without taking unnecessary risks, while the visitors struggled to find a route through the home side’s defence.
The contest also featured several bookings as Getafe attempted to disrupt Barcelona’s rhythm. Kiko Femenía was cautioned in the 34th minute, followed by Johan Mojica in first-half stoppage time. Barcelona’s Dani Olmo received a yellow card shortly after the restart, while Getafe’s Sebastián Boselli and Ramón Terrats were also booked in the second half. Fermín López received a late yellow card for Barcelona in stoppage time.
Despite the physical exchanges and disciplinary interruptions, the match finished without a red card. Barcelona’s control of possession and their ability to score at important moments prevented Getafe from building enough momentum to threaten a comeback.
For Getafe, the defeat exposed the difficulties of facing a side capable of pressing relentlessly and punishing mistakes in possession. Their defensive approach failed to prevent an early goal, and the error that led to Jesus’s strike made the task considerably harder.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be encouraged by the performance of their new attacking options and the continued contribution of established players such as Yamal and Koundé. Gordon’s early breakthrough provided the headline moment, but the collective performance was just as important in securing the three points.
The 3-0 victory gave Barcelona another positive result as they prepared for a demanding run of fixtures across domestic and European competitions. With their winning streak intact, Flick’s side have continued to show consistency, attacking ambition and the ability to control matches against opponents determined to frustrate them.
For Gordon, scoring his first official goal for Barcelona offered a memorable moment and a promising indication of what he could contribute to the team. For Barcelona as a whole, the result was another statement of intent in their pursuit of the La Liga title.
