Manchester United missed the opportunity to secure a crucial Premier League victory after Tottenham Hotspur snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in Matchweek 8.

Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 73rd minute, but Dominic Solanke rescued a point for Tottenham with a 90+2-minute header despite the visitors playing with ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s controversial red card.

The encounter featured missed opportunities, a disallowed goal, several bookings and late drama that left both teams frustrated.

Tottenham started brightly, creating promising opportunities through their attacking movement and exploiting spaces in United’s defence. However, the visitors struggled to turn their chances into goals, with Solanke and Mohammed Kudus unable to capitalise on their opportunities.

Conor Gallagher also threatened inside the penalty area, but United’s defence recovered to prevent him from producing a decisive finish.

United gradually improved as the first half progressed, with Mbeumo and Amad Diallo offering attacking outlets. However, neither side found the breakthrough before the interval.

Tottenham continued to threaten after the restart. In the 51st minute, Savio delivered a cross from the left that found Solanke approximately six yards from goal, but the striker failed to make clean contact and sent his effort over the crossbar.

United thought they had scored four minutes later when Youri Tielemans finished after Matheus Cunha recovered the ball near the left touchline. However, the goal was disallowed because the ball had crossed the line before Cunha returned it to play.

Tottenham remained dangerous, but Destiny Udogie’s effort in the 65th minute failed to produce a goal.

Mbeumo Breaks the Deadlock

Manchester United finally took the lead in the 73rd minute through Mbeumo.

Cunha carried the ball down the left before delivering a cutback into the penalty area. Mbeumo found space to turn and calmly direct his finish across goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into the bottom-right corner.

The goal rewarded United’s improved second-half performance and raised hopes of securing all three points.

However, the match took another dramatic turn five minutes later when Bentancur was sent off following a confrontation with United defender Luke Shaw.

The incident began with a dangerous scissor-tackle on Shaw, who reacted by pushing the Tottenham midfielder in the chest. Bentancur responded by thrusting his head towards Shaw, sparking a confrontation involving players from both teams.

The referee showed Bentancur a straight red card, while Shaw and Tottenham defender Jan Paul van Hecke received yellow cards.

United appeared well placed to protect their lead against ten men, but further disciplinary incidents added to the tension. Bruno Fernandes was booked in the 83rd minute, followed by Lisandro Martinez in the 87th.

Diogo Dalot and Tottenham’s Archie Gray also received yellow cards in stoppage time.

Solanke Rescues Tottenham in Stoppage Time

Just when United appeared to have secured victory, Tottenham found a dramatic equaliser in the 90+2nd minute.

Sandro Tonali delivered a cross from the left-hand edge of the penalty area, and Solanke battled with Martinez before directing a header across goalkeeper Senne Lammens into the bottom-right corner.

The goal stunned the home supporters and rewarded Tottenham’s persistence despite their numerical disadvantage.

United pushed for a late winner, with Harry Maguire testing Kinsky with a powerful effort. However, the Tottenham goalkeeper made the save, while substitute Carlos Baleba sent another attempt over the crossbar.

The final whistle confirmed a frustrating 1-1 draw.

For United, the result highlighted their failure to protect a lead despite enjoying a numerical advantage. Mbeumo’s goal had put them in control, but defensive lapses allowed Tottenham to escape with a point.

Tottenham, meanwhile, showed resilience by fighting back after going behind and losing Bentancur to a red card. Nevertheless, their earlier missed chances demonstrated how costly poor finishing can be.

Ultimately, Solanke’s late header ensured Tottenham avoided defeat at Old Trafford, while United were left to reflect on two dropped points in a match they had appeared capable of winning.
