A Nigerian man has questioned Nollywood actor William Uchemba over his alleged silence following the reported violence involving supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, drawing attention to the role of celebrities in speaking out against bad governance.
In a post circulating on social media, the man expressed surprise that Uchemba, whom he said had previously been vocal about governance issues, had not publicly acknowledged the reported incident.
“Politics is really strong ooo. So, all of a sudden, actor William Uchemba is no longer talking about bad governance? If you knew him before, you wouldn’t believe he could change this way,” the man said.
He also questioned why the actor had allegedly not commented on reports that someone died during the incident, extending his criticism to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who is related to Uchemba by marriage.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported death remain disputed. The Enugu State Government said on October 11 that no one had died during the violence, although it confirmed that a 43-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Nworie, sustained a gunshot injury.
The police also confirmed that a man was shot during the incident and said he was receiving medical treatment. Authorities subsequently ordered an investigation into the violence.
The attack reportedly occurred on October 10, 2026, during events involving NDC supporters at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu. The party’s supporters alleged that they were attacked while participating in political activities connected to the party’s governorship campaign.
The incident prompted criticism from opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the NDC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which called for investigations and better protection for opposition members.
Governor Mbah subsequently addressed the violence, calling for a thorough and impartial police investigation and insisting that anyone found responsible for criminal acts should face prosecution.
The governor also expressed concern for those affected by the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to protecting residents’ safety and their right to participate in lawful political activities.
Meanwhile, the social media criticism of Uchemba has raised broader questions about whether public figures who previously spoke against poor governance should be expected to comment on every major political controversy.
Uchemba has previously shared views on social and national issues, making his perceived silence a subject of discussion among some social media users. However, there is no independently verified evidence establishing his position on this particular incident.
As investigations continue, the circumstances of the violence and the disputed reports surrounding the alleged death remain matters requiring confirmation from the relevant authorities.
