Anambra-based content creator Waga has declared support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning South-East governors that young voters could reject their preferred political direction at the polls.
In a statement circulating online, Waga said that although many people in the region respected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as an elder, that respect would not necessarily translate into support for his re-election.
“We love Tinubu as an elder, but when it comes to voting in the 2027 election, we need to vote for Peter Obi,” the content creator reportedly said.
Waga also criticised the perceived alignment of several South-East governors with Tinubu’s second-term ambition, arguing that young voters should be free to make their own decisions rather than follow the political choices of their state leaders.
The content creator specifically mentioned Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Waga warned that young voters could demonstrate their political independence by voting differently from the governors, potentially weakening the influence of regional political leaders in national electoral calculations.
The remarks come amid growing political discussions across the South-East over the direction of the 2027 presidential election and whether the region’s electorate will follow the positions adopted by influential political figures.
Soludo has openly backed Tinubu’s re-election bid, while Mbah, Nwifuru and Uzodimma have also aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate. Alex Otti, however, has maintained a different political position and should not automatically be grouped with the governors who have explicitly endorsed Tinubu.
The divide between political leaders and grassroots supporters has become a major talking point as the next general election approaches. Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor who attracted significant youth support during the 2023 presidential election, remains a central figure in discussions about the opposition’s prospects.
Waga’s reported comments reflect the view among some young Nigerians that electoral decisions should be based on individual convictions rather than instructions from governors or other political leaders.
The content creator also suggested that the outcome of the election could affect how much influence the governors wield in Abuja, particularly if their preferred candidate fails to secure strong support from voters in their states.
However, whether young voters across the region will unite behind Obi remains to be seen. Electoral outcomes will depend on the candidates on the ballot, party structures, voter turnout and the decisions of millions of individual Nigerians.
With the 2027 election approaching, the debate over political loyalty, youth participation and the influence of governors is expected to remain prominent in the South-East.
Waga’s reported declaration adds another voice to the discussion, challenging regional political leaders and highlighting the possibility that voters may choose a different direction from the one favoured by their governors.
