LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Customs Service at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport has urged courier companies to address delays in parcel delivery. The service said parcels should be presented for assessment promptly.

The call was made on Wednesday by the Customs Area Controller, MMIA Command, Comptroller Suleiman Bomai. He spoke during a meeting with courier operators in Lagos.

The Delay Problem

Bomai said the command had received complaints about delays. He said parcels often sit in courier warehouses for days before being presented for customs assessment.

He said the delays frustrate importers and slow down trade. He also said they create opportunities for theft and damage.

“Courier companies must improve their processes. Parcels should be presented for assessment without unnecessary delay,” Bomai stated.

Customs Reforms

The Customs Area Controller said the service had implemented reforms to speed up clearance. He said the use of technology has improved efficiency. He said the command now operates a 24-hour clearance system.

He urged courier companies to take advantage of the reforms. He said they should ensure that their documents are complete and accurate.
