Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reportedly intensified his criticism of Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, accusing him of hypocrisy and allegedly using his influence and supporters for political interests.
In a statement circulating on social media, VDM reportedly warned Davido against speaking about Nigerian politics, arguing that the singer’s involvement in political campaigns had raised questions about his motives and commitment to the interests of ordinary Nigerians.
The activist was quoted as saying that Davido had used his fans and accused him of prioritising personal and family interests over the welfare of the people. He also challenged the singer to use his influence to attract investors, create employment opportunities and promote development in Osun State.
The latest controversy comes amid renewed debate over the political activities of Davido and his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Davido played a prominent role in his uncle’s campaign during the August 15, 2026, Osun governorship election. He mobilised supporters, attended campaign events and used his social media platforms to encourage voters to support Adeleke, who secured re-election on the platform of the Accord Party.
Following the election, Davido celebrated his uncle’s victory online, writing, “WE DID IT UNC!!!” in a post that reflected his excitement over the outcome. Channels Television reported that Adeleke received 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
However, the political atmosphere surrounding the Adeleke family has since shifted. A report published on October 15, 2026, said Davido’s earlier declaration that he could never support the All Progressives Congress had resurfaced following reports that Adeleke had been appointed coordinator of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign in Osun.
The development has triggered questions among some social media users about the relationship between the singer’s earlier political messaging and his family’s evolving political alliances.
VDM had previously criticised Davido over his political involvement. In August 2026, the activist challenged the singer to maintain the same level of political engagement during the 2027 general election, particularly if he continued to oppose the APC. He argued that Davido’s voice had been prominent when his uncle’s political interests were at stake and questioned whether he would speak with equal intensity on wider national issues.
The disagreement followed an earlier controversy in July, when VDM claimed that Davido and members of his team had offered him ₦50 million to campaign for Adeleke. VDM said he rejected the alleged offer. However, he did not publicly provide evidence substantiating the claim, and Davido had not publicly responded to the allegation in the reports reviewed.
The dispute has consequently become about more than celebrity friendship. It has raised wider questions about political consistency, the influence of entertainers during elections and whether celebrities should be held accountable for the political positions they promote to their followers.
As the 2027 general election approaches, Davido’s political involvement and the evolving relationship between his family and Nigeria’s major political figures are likely to remain subjects of public discussion.
The specific statement in which VDM allegedly threatened to “finish” and expose Davido could not be independently verified in the reports reviewed. The precise wording should therefore be treated cautiously until the original video or post is confirmed.
