Understanding various vehicle number plates in Nigeria

Published

on

For many Nigerians, vehicle plate numbers are just a random combination of letters and numbers.

However, a closer look reveals that the colors used on these plate numbers hold a significant secret.

According to the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the colors used on vehicle plate numbers are not just for aesthetic purposes, but rather to indicate the purpose of the vehicle.

A blue-lettered plate number indicates that the vehicle is privately owned, while a red-lettered plate number signifies that the vehicle is used for commercial purposes.

Government-owned vehicles, on the other hand, bear green-lettered plate numbers, and are typically used by government officials.

Lastly, black-lettered plate numbers are reserved for members of the Armed Forces, including the Military and Paramilitary.

This little-known fact has significant implications for road users, as it can help identify the purpose of a vehicle and potentially influence how one interacts with it on the road.

In an interview, an FRSC official emphasized the importance of understanding the meaning behind vehicle plate numbers.

“It’s essential for road users to be aware of the purpose of a vehicle, especially in emergency situations,” the official said.

As Nigerians take to the roads, it’s crucial to pay attention to the colours on vehicle plate numbers.

By doing so, we can promote safer roads and a more informed driving community.
