Russia has lost over than 2,000 troops in the past 24 hours, reaching a record daily high, according to Ukraine’s military.

Diaspora Digital Media reports that Ukraine’s General Staff shared the estimated losses for Russia’s forces in its routine battlefield update on Friday morning, adding that more than 300 weapons and military equipment were also destroyed – though the figures cannot be independently verified.

Moscow’s shocking losses come as Vladimir Putin’s army seeks to seize as much territory as possible ahead of Donald Trump’s imminent return to the White House, with both sides expecting Washington to push for ceasefire talks early next year.

Although their ranks are suffering heavy casualties, the Russian army is advancing westward in Ukraine at a rate faster than any other time after the initial days of the 2022 invasion, taking an area half the size of London over the past month.

According to the report, the figure could not be independently verified and battlefield losses are notoriously difficult to estimate.

It surpasses the 1,950 Russian losses recorded By Ukraine on November 12.

It comes as Russia continues its assault on Ukraine’s east, launching more than 100 attacks in the key strategic hubs of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.

Moscow has also stepped up its aerial attacks in response to Ukraine’s use of Western long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia. Ukraine said it shot down 88 out of 132 Russian drones launched overnight.

On Thursday, Moscow carried out what was described as a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s power grid, causing blackouts across the country.

Russian increasing casualties

Russia’s troop casualties in Ukraine are estimated to be significantly high, with various sources providing different numbers. As of mid-September 2024, the estimated casualties range from 66,000 to 88,000 killed, with some estimates as high as 120,000 killed through June 30, 2024.

The daily average of Russian military casualties in the conflict was about 1,000 soldiers as of August 2024, according to a Western official.

Additionally, NATO and Western military officials reported that around 1,200 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded in Ukraine every day on average in May and June 2024 ¹.

It’s worth noting that the number of civilian and military deaths is impossible to determine with precision, and different sources may provide varying estimates.
