Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been hospitalised after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve-team training session on Friday, October 23, prompting concern over the Belgian coach’s health.

The German champions confirmed that the 40-year-old required medical attention following the incident at their training ground in Munich. The club said Kompany would undergo a thorough medical examination and remain under medical care while his coaching staff temporarily assumed responsibility for training and match preparations.

The incident came just days after Kompany returned to the touchline for Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Arsenal, despite recently suffering from a viral infection that had forced him to miss training sessions and a pre-match press conference.

According to reports from Germany, Kompany collapsed while observing the club’s second team after the first-team training session. Emergency medical assistance was arranged, and a rescue helicopter was reported to have arrived at the training facility before he was taken to hospital.

Bayern have not publicly established the precise medical cause of the collapse. Although Kompany had been recovering from a virus, it remains unclear whether his recent illness was directly responsible for Friday’s incident.

The club moved quickly to reassure supporters that the manager would receive the necessary medical attention, stressing that his health was the immediate priority.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl expressed the club’s support for Kompany and said he would be given sufficient time to recover.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our utmost priority,” Eberl said, according to the club’s statement.

He added that Bayern would provide all the necessary medical care and support, while the coaching staff would take over Kompany’s responsibilities during his absence. The club also wished its manager a speedy recovery.

Kompany’s hospitalisation follows a difficult week in which he had already been struggling with his health.

The former Manchester City captain missed training sessions on Monday and Tuesday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal. Assistant coach Aaron Danks also represented him at the pre-match press conference, explaining that the manager needed rest while recovering from a viral infection.

Despite those concerns, Kompany returned to the touchline on Wednesday as Bayern drew 2-2 with Arsenal in Munich.

Speaking after that match, the Belgian acknowledged that he had caught a particularly severe virus and had continued working despite his body’s warning signs.

His decision to return for the Arsenal fixture demonstrated his determination to remain involved with the team, but Friday’s collapse has raised fresh concerns about his recovery.

Kompany took charge of Bayern in May 2024 after previous managerial spells at Anderlecht and Burnley. His appointment represented a significant opportunity to establish himself among Europe’s leading coaches, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a defender.

Before entering management, he captained Manchester City and helped the English club win multiple major honours, including Premier League titles. He also represented Belgium at international level.

At Bayern, Kompany has been tasked with maintaining the club’s domestic dominance while competing for European honours. His team recently faced Arsenal in a demanding Champions League encounter and are scheduled to return to Bundesliga action against Freiburg on Sunday.

However, his availability for that fixture remains uncertain following the hospitalisation. Bayern have indicated that his coaching staff will manage training and match operations until further notice, without announcing a specific return date.

For now, the club’s immediate concern is Kompany’s recovery rather than its upcoming fixtures. Supporters will await further information from Bayern as medical examinations continue.

The circumstances surrounding the collapse and the relationship, if any, with his recent viral infection have not been fully established. Until the club provides additional information, the precise cause of the incident remains unconfirmed.
