Who wThe World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, has said Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the evacuation of the country’s index patient and her husband to Switzerland.
Janabi disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, October 26, 2026.
He said the patient and her husband, who are both Swiss citizens, were evacuated earlier in the day, adding that Switzerland would take over the patient’s continued medical care and monitor her husband.
According to him, Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case, while the patient’s husband, identified as contact number 53, would be followed up in Switzerland.
Janabi said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition before the evacuation.
He congratulated the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the country’s Ebola response.
The WHO official described the development as a remarkable achievement, saying it demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborate to address health emergencies.
However, he stressed that the evacuation did not remove the need for vigilance, urging continued monitoring of contacts and sustained implementation of other response measures.
Janabi said Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of the 52 contacts still under its supervision, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s ongoing treatment and monitoring of her husband.
The evacuation follows Nigeria’s response to the Ebola case, which involved identifying and monitoring people who may have been exposed to the virus.
Health authorities have continued surveillance and contact tracing as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.
