The Federal Government has introduced a revised Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code in a move aimed at improving pipeline access, attracting investment and strengthening the country’s gas industry.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) unveiled Revision II of the code on October 26, 2026, at the opening of OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos.

The revised framework builds on the original code introduced in 2020 and its first revision in 2024.

The code establishes rules for how gas producers, transporters and buyers access shared pipeline infrastructure.

It covers capacity booking, gas nominations, measurement, quality standards and balancing, helping to make transportation arrangements more transparent and predictable for industry participants.

NMDPRA Chief Executive Rabiu Abdullahi Umar said the framework was designed to ensure fair access to gas transportation infrastructure.

He also highlighted the need for investment in pipelines, processing facilities and storage to fully utilise Nigeria’s substantial gas reserves.

The revision comes as Nigeria seeks to increase domestic gas consumption, improve electricity generation and expand industrial production.

Better pipeline access could help power plants and factories receive gas more reliably while creating opportunities for businesses operating across the energy value chain.

The revised code also introduces initial provisions to support regional gas transportation, reinforcing efforts to facilitate cross-border energy trade.

This could become increasingly important as Nigeria explores wider energy connections with other African countries.

However, the success of the new framework will depend on effective implementation, infrastructure development and sustained investment.

Clearer rules may improve investor confidence, but expanding gas supply and transportation capacity remains essential to translating Nigeria’s gas resources into broader economic benefits.
