Netflix is testing AI Discover, a theme-based TV tab for mood-led recommendations, with access initially limited to some U.S. users.
Netflix is testing AI Discover, a new TV-app tab that helps viewers choose something to watch by mood or theme. The test began rolling out in the United States on Tuesday. Members pick a theme, see matching recommendations and can refine the list. Netflix is starting with a small group, so the feature is not yet available to everyone.
How Netflix AI Discover works
The first experience starts with themes such as “Something Light,” “Scare Me,” “Family Movie Night” and “Quick Watches.” Each theme includes a clip from a Netflix title. Some choices reflect a viewer’s mood or who is watching. Others match available time or what is new and popular. Netflix says members can then explore more specific themes.
After someone chooses a theme, Netflix displays matching shows or films. Viewers can select “Something Different” to start over, or continue into narrower categories. Each title has a “Tune Your Recommendations” button beside Play and My List. Members can use it to keep a suggestion or ask Netflix not to recommend it again.
Netflix’s AI layer responds to viewer input
Netflix says AI helps create the themes. Its new “intelligence layer” responds to members’ input in real time. The system also learns from their feedback within AI Discover. Netflix has not identified the model or technology provider behind the feature. It has not published technical details about how the system selects each title.
The experience uses preset themes rather than opening as a chat with a bot. Variety reported that recommendations can draw on viewing history and preferences. They can also reflect what is trending on the service. The tab combines existing personalization with direct input from viewers. Members can tell Netflix what they want to watch now. The company has not said exactly how it weighs those signals.
How the new tab differs from Netflix’s recommendations
Netflix already personalizes the service using viewing history, ratings, information about titles and other signals. Its Help Center says the existing system also considers factors such as language, device and viewing habits. AI Discover does not replace that system. Netflix describes the tab as an additional way to explore its library.
The company says the first experience is meant to respond to a particular viewing moment. Someone can start with “Quick Watches” or “Family Movie Night” instead of scrolling through rows of suggested titles. They can then tell Netflix whether a recommendation fits. The company says it will remember that feedback in AI Discover, so rejected suggestions do not keep returning there.
AI Discover rollout is limited at launch
Netflix said the rollout begins in the U.S. for members who use the service in English on supported TVs. Access is gradual, and the company plans to reach more people in the coming weeks. Members with access should see a Discover button in the TV app’s top navigation. It has a red gem icon and a “New” label. The launch announcement does not promise access on every television model.
Variety reported that the feature will not appear on kids’ profiles. The rollout is therefore narrower than a full launch across Netflix accounts and devices. Netflix has not announced a date for wider availability or a specific country-by-country schedule. Viewers outside the initial group may not see the tab yet.
Netflix plans to use the test to shape discovery
Netflix is presenting AI Discover as an experiment, not a finished replacement for its homepage. The company says member use and feedback will help it decide which ideas to keep, improve or expand. Some features could eventually move into the main Netflix experience. The company has not said which parts, if any, will make that transition.
Netflix engineering director Etay Teller described the goal as making discovery more personal. “Our goal is to reimagine Discover so that over time every member’s experience feels more personal.” — Etay Teller, engineering director at Netflix. That is the company’s aim for the product, not a measured result from the current test.
Ultimately, AI Discover gives Netflix members a new way to narrow a large catalog using themes and real-time feedback. Its initial reach remains limited to some U.S. users on supported TVs. Netflix will use the test to assess which discovery ideas work best. Wider availability will depend on how the company develops the feature.
