FC Porto produced a commanding second-half performance to secure an emphatic 4-1 victory over Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, with Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa finding the net after the hosts survived a first-half fightback from the Italian champions.

Francesco Farioli’s men made the most of their home advantage at the Estádio do Dragão, scoring three times after the interval to condemn Napoli to another disappointing European result. Jan Bednarek also opened the scoring early, while Scott McTominay briefly restored parity for the visitors before Porto took complete control.

Napoli initially threatened to make life uncomfortable for the Portuguese side, with McTominay firing over the crossbar in the third minute following a delivery from Matteo Politano. Rasmus Højlund also had an effort blocked shortly afterwards as the visitors attempted to establish an early foothold.

However, Porto gradually settled into the contest and found the breakthrough in the 11th minute.

Gabri Veiga delivered an inviting corner into the penalty area, where Bednarek escaped his marker and rose highest to direct a powerful header into the bottom-left corner, leaving goalkeeper Alex Meret with little chance.

The opening goal gave Porto confidence, but Napoli responded with greater attacking intent as the first half progressed. Frank Anguissa, Antonio Vergara, Amir Rrahmani and McTominay all received yellow cards as the visitors struggled to contain Porto’s movement and were repeatedly forced into committing fouls.

Veiga nearly doubled Porto’s advantage in the 37th minute when he stepped up to take a direct free-kick, but his effort flew narrowly wide of the target.

Napoli eventually found their equaliser two minutes before half-time following an intense spell of attacking pressure.

Politano first tested Diogo Costa with a curling effort from inside the penalty area, forcing the Porto goalkeeper into a save. Kevin De Bruyne then delivered another dangerous ball into the box, with Højlund seeing his attempt denied before McTominay reacted quickest to the rebound.

The Scotland international smashed the loose ball into the net in the 43rd minute, restoring parity at 1-1 and giving Napoli renewed hope heading into the interval.

There was still time for more drama before the break, as Veiga received a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time.

Napoli also had a goal from Højlund ruled out for a marginal offside decision, denying the visitors the opportunity to take the lead.

Porto returned from the interval with greater urgency and immediately began searching for another breakthrough. Gabri Veiga tested Meret in the 49th minute, while Pablo Rosario was denied by the Napoli goalkeeper three minutes later after finding space inside the penalty area.

The hosts continued piling on the pressure, with Jan Bednarek coming agonisingly close to scoring his second goal of the evening in the 56th minute. The Polish defender connected with Veiga’s corner delivery, but his powerful header crashed against the crossbar.

Porto were clearly growing in confidence, and Veiga produced another moment of quality in the 63rd minute when his powerful long-range effort struck the crossbar, leaving Meret beaten as the ball bounced back into play.

The Spanish midfielder had come close twice, but his persistence eventually paid off eight minutes later.

In the 71st minute, Santiago Giménez released Veiga with an excellent through ball during a swift Porto counterattack. The midfielder raced into the penalty area before calmly finishing with his left foot to beat Meret and restore the hosts’ advantage at 2-1.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Porto’s favour, although Napoli goalkeeper Meret prevented the deficit from increasing when he saved another effort from Giménez in the 70th minute.

Napoli attempted to respond, with Antonio Vergara forcing Diogo Costa into an important save in the 77th minute after receiving a through ball from Billy Gilmour.

However, Porto delivered another blow in the 80th minute.

Hwang In-Beom, who had entered the contest as a substitute, delivered a dangerous cross from a corner, allowing Jakub Kiwior to rise inside the penalty area and guide a header into the bottom-left corner.

The goal made it 3-1 and left Napoli with a difficult task in the closing stages.

The visitors continued searching for a response, but their hopes of mounting another comeback suffered a major setback in the 88th minute when Rafa Marín was sent off.

The Napoli defender brought down substitute Samu Aghehowa inside the penalty area, prompting referee Oliver to award Porto a penalty and show Marín a straight red card for the foul.

Samu stepped forward to take responsibility from the spot and made no mistake, sending Meret the wrong way with a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner in the 90th minute to complete Porto’s 4-1 victory.

Napoli still attempted to find another consolation goal, but Noa Lang’s effort from outside the penalty area was comfortably saved by Diogo Costa in stoppage time.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive victory for Porto, who produced an impressive response after conceding McTominay’s equaliser and made their second-half dominance count.

For Napoli, the defeat was another frustrating European evening, with defensive lapses, missed opportunities and Marín’s dismissal making an already difficult night even worse.

Porto, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from the performance, particularly their ability to turn a closely contested encounter into a convincing victory through set-piece quality, quick transitions and clinical finishing.
