Leeds United ended their five-game winless run in the Premier League with a deserved 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday, November 7, as substitute Noah Okafor delivered a decisive late winner to end the visitors’ three-match winning streak.

Daniel Farke’s men produced an impressive second-half performance after a competitive opening period, with Okafor making an immediate impact by scoring just 97 seconds after entering the pitch. However, the result was overshadowed by a controversial first-half VAR decision involving Leeds defender Jayden Bogle and Tottenham forward Mathys Tel.

Leeds started aggressively, looking to take advantage of their home support, and appealed for a penalty as early as the fourth minute after Mateus Fernandes appeared to handle the ball inside the penalty area. Referee John Brooks allowed play to continue, and VAR official Tony Harrington supported the decision after reviewing the incident.

Tottenham gradually settled into the contest, with Omar Marmoush testing James Trafford with an effort that took a deflection off Tarik Muharemović before the Leeds goalkeeper gathered the ball. Mohammed Kudus also attempted to trouble Trafford, but his effort was comfortably handled.

The biggest controversy arrived in the 34th minute when Bogle caught Tel on the Achilles with a dangerous challenge. The Tottenham winger immediately went down in pain, prompting a lengthy VAR review of approximately four minutes to determine whether the Leeds defender deserved a red card.

Despite Tottenham’s protests, referee Brooks was not advised to conduct an on-field review, and Bogle escaped further punishment. The challenge was considered reckless rather than serious foul play, a decision that angered the visiting side.

Tel attempted to continue but was eventually forced off in the 43rd minute, with Dominic Solanke introduced as his replacement.

Leeds almost capitalised on the controversy moments later when Bogle delivered a dangerous cross towards Lukas Nmecha, whose header was directed straight at Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.

Mohammed Kudus also produced a dangerous low cross towards the end of the first half, but nobody in a Tottenham shirt could make contact as the ball flashed across the face of goal.

Both sides went into the interval without finding the breakthrough, but Leeds returned with greater attacking urgency.

Farke introduced Melvin Bard for Gabriel Gudmundsson at half-time, and the change immediately improved Leeds’ attacking threat down the left flank.

The hosts came agonisingly close to scoring in the 50th minute when a dangerous delivery caused Micky van de Ven to divert the ball towards his own goal, sending it over the crossbar.

From the resulting corner, Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet the delivery with a powerful header, but Solanke produced an excellent goal-line clearance to prevent Leeds from taking the lead. Nico Elvedi failed to convert the rebound as Tottenham survived another major scare.

Three minutes later, Calvert-Lewin created another opportunity by cutting the ball back into the path of Ao Tanaka inside the penalty area. However, the Japanese midfielder could not keep his effort down, sending it over Kinský’s crossbar.

Leeds continued piling on the pressure, with Nmecha and Ethan Ampadu seeing their attempts blocked as Tottenham struggled to regain control.

The visitors also had opportunities, with Conor Gallagher firing narrowly wide as Tottenham attempted to exploit spaces left by Leeds’ attacking approach.

Kinský then produced one of the outstanding saves of the afternoon in the 75th minute when Sean Longstaff controlled a cross brilliantly before attempting to finish. The Tottenham goalkeeper reacted superbly, stretching out his fingertips to divert the effort over the crossbar.

Farke responded by introducing Harry Wilson and Noah Okafor in the 77th minute, replacing Tanaka and Nmecha respectively.

The substitutions immediately transformed the contest.

In the 79th minute, Leeds finally broke Tottenham’s resistance. A throw-in was directed into the penalty area, with Calvert-Lewin helping the ball into the attacking space. Wilson then helped push it into Okafor’s path, allowing the Swiss forward to take a touch, create room and fire a powerful right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner beyond Kinský.

The goal arrived just 97 seconds after Okafor entered the pitch, making it one of the quickest impacts by a substitute in the Premier League this season.

Elland Road erupted as Leeds took a deserved 1-0 advantage, rewarding Farke’s attacking substitutions and the team’s impressive second-half display.

Okafor was subsequently booked for removing his shirt during his celebration.

Tottenham attempted to respond, introducing fresh attacking options as Roberto De Zerbi searched for an equaliser. However, Leeds remained organised and continued threatening on the counterattack.

In stoppage time, Tottenham came close to rescuing a point when Jan Paul van Hecke connected with a free-kick delivery and directed a header towards the corner. Trafford produced an outstanding diving save to his left, pushing the ball around the post to preserve Leeds’ advantage.

The final whistle confirmed an important victory for the home side, ending their five-game winless run and bringing Tottenham’s three-match winning streak to an end.

Leeds also moved above Tottenham into eighth position in the Premier League standings, while the visitors dropped to 10th.

For Leeds, Okafor’s immediate contribution and Trafford’s late intervention proved decisive. Tottenham, meanwhile, will feel aggrieved by the controversial Bogle challenge, particularly after Tel was forced off injured.

Ultimately, Farke’s substitutions and Leeds’ second-half dominance made the difference in a contest that produced defensive drama, missed opportunities, outstanding goalkeeping and a decisive late winner.
