Guéhi avoids FA charge for ‘I Iove Jesus’ armband

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi has avoided facing charges from the Football Association (FA) after wearing a customized captain’s armband during the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

The armband, which promoted LGBTQ+ inclusion in football, featured a rainbow-colored design with the phrase “I love Jesus” written on it.

Although FA rules prohibit players from displaying political or religious messages on their equipment, Guehi will reportedly receive a reminder about these guidelines rather than face formal charges.

As the son of a church minister, Guehi has openly expressed his Christian faith in the past.

His decision to wear the customized armband sparked discussion about the intersection of faith, identity, and inclusivity in sports.

In contrast, Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy opted not to wear the Rainbow Laces armband, citing his own religious beliefs.

The Rainbow Laces campaign, organized by Stonewall, aims to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion and acceptance in football.

Despite some controversy surrounding individual players’ choices, the campaign has highlighted the importance of creating safe and welcoming environments for all athletes, regardless of their background or identity.
