Understanding HMPV – Chinese virus causing global panic

Published

on

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been making headlines lately, with reports of a surge in cases in China. But what exactly is HMPV, and should we be concerned? Let’s dive into the facts.

HMPV is a common respiratory virus that affects people of all ages. It was first discovered in 2001 by Dutch virologists and is known to cause symptoms similar to those of the common cold or flu, such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.

HMPV is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets, contact with contaminated surfaces, and close contact with an infected person. However, it’s worth noting that most people will have some pre-existing immunity to HMPV, as it has been circulating for decades.

While HMPV can affect anyone, certain groups are more susceptible to severe illness. These include young children under the age of 5, older adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy.

According to experts, HMPV is unlikely to trigger a pandemic. Unlike COVID-19, which was a new virus, HMPV has been circulating for decades, and most people have some level of immunity.

Reports from China indicate a surge in respiratory viral infections, including HMPV, in northern provinces. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that this increase is within the expected range for this time of year during the Northern hemisphere winter.

While there is no specific vaccine or treatment for HMPV, there are steps you can take to prevent infection. Practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently, avoid close contact with people who are sick, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when sick, and get plenty of rest. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications can help alleviate symptoms.

While HMPV is a contagious respiratory virus, it’s not yet a pandemic threat but countries have been screening persons coming in from China.
