Tragedy struck in Niger State, Nigeria, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when a petrol tanker exploded, claiming the lives of over 50 people.

The incident occurred along the Dikko-Maje Road, opposite Badeggi filling station in Suleja Local Government Area.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander in Niger State, Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, the tanker fell and spilled its contents, prompting people to gather and scoop the fuel.

Unfortunately, an explosion occurred, affecting both those scooping the fuel and rescue efforts.

The resulting fire engulfed a wide area, leaving charred remains and widespread destruction.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is working alongside other agencies to conduct search, rescue, and recovery operations.

The injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment, and efforts are ongoing to retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Nigeria. In October 2024, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State killed 209 people and injured 124 others.

Such tragedies highlight the need for improved safety measures and emergency response strategies to mitigate the impact of these incidents.
