Breaking: Senator Ned Nwoko poised to defect to APC

Senator Ned Nwoko, who currently represents Delta North in the Senate, is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that this move marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Delta State, as Nwoko’s defection would make the APC the dominant party in the state’s Senate delegation.

Nwoko’s decision to leave the PDP has been confirmed by POLITICS NIGERIA.

His defection, when finalized, will mean that the APC will control all three Senate seats in Delta State.

In the 2023 general elections, the APC won the Delta Central and Delta South senatorial districts, solidifying the party’s hold on the state’s representation in the Senate.

Nwoko’s strained relationship with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, is believed to be a key factor behind his decision.

It is alleged that Nwoko and his Delta North constituency have felt sidelined by the current governor, who is perceived to prioritize the interests of his political godfather, Okowa.

This tension between Nwoko and Oborevwori has been growing, as the senator has expressed frustration over what he sees as his political marginalization.

The power struggle in the state has intensified due to the rivalry between Nwoko and Okowa.

Reports suggest that Okowa, who was a vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections alongside Atiku Abubakar, is planning to contest for the Delta North Senate seat currently held by Nwoko in the 2027 election.

This has further fueled the rift between Nwoko and the former governor.

In November 2024, Okowa found himself in legal trouble when he was arrested for allegedly embezzling N1.3 trillion from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.

Though Okowa was later released, his passport was confiscated, raising questions about his political future.

As Nwoko prepares to switch allegiance to the APC, his defection is seen as part of a broader shift in Delta State’s political dynamics.

The APC’s growing influence, bolstered by Nwoko’s move, could reshape the balance of power in the state, especially with the possibility of a future contest for the Delta North Senateseat between Nwoko and Okowa.
