The Federal Government (FG) has announced plans to provide financial incentives to Nigerians who enroll in technical and vocational schools.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that this initiative is aimed at diversifying the economy and addressing the country’s shortage of vocational skills.
According to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the FG is committed to changing the perception of vocational education and making it a viable career path.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, he emphasized the importance of skilled labor in developed countries.
“You go to the UK or the US today, and a plumber earns more than a doctor.
“In England, an electrician can make more than a doctor.
“So why should it be different here?” the minister asked.
The FG’s new strategy for technical and vocational education involves a four-step approach.
The first step is to provide financial support to students enrolling in these programs.
“We will pay students to attend vocational schools.
“We have developed a model to determine the amount they will receive, and when we roll out the program, we will make an official announcement,” Alausa stated.
By offering financial incentives, the FG aims to encourage more Nigerians to pursue careers in technical fields, which are critical to economic development.
The government believes that by investing in vocational training, it can bridge the skill gap in industries such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry, ultimately reducing unemployment and boosting productivity.
