Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on Thursday, confirmed to the Senate Committee on Finance that the 23,000 ghost workers have been unravelled.

The discovery was made by the panel investigating payments of multiple salaries in the Federal Civil Service.

She added that those involved would soon be handed over to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution.

Speaking when she appeared before the committee, the Minister said banks that connived with the workers to pad the Federal government payroll are going to be prosecuted too.

“We will not only sack them, we will ensure the recovery of the money they have been collecting over the years from the Federal government,” she said.

She explained that the panel was able to uncover the ghost workers due to introduction of Bank Verification Number (BVN).

According to her, the failure of the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to effectively deal with the issue of ghost workers in the federal civil service led to the unravelling.
