Police officers accused of extrajudicial killings in Ondo

The Ifon Community Development Association (CDA) in Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria, has issued a heartfelt plea for justice following the deaths of two young men, Tolu Bobade and Bamise Orisamolade.

The unrest, which occurred over the weekend, has left the town in mourning

*Timeline of the tragedy 

The crisis began on Saturday, February 15, 2025, when Tolu Bobade, an indigene of Ifon town, was allegedly tortured to death by police officers in Ifon.

According to reports, Bobade was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but the community has accused the police of excessive force and misconduct.

The following day, Sunday, February 16, 2025, tensions escalated when **Bamise Orisamolade, another young man from the community, was reportedly shot at close range by police officers during a peaceful protest.

The protest, organized by residents demanding justice for Bobade’s death, turned violent when police reinforcements arrived.

Orisamolade’s death further inflamed the situation, leading to the invasion and burning of the Ifon police station by angry protesters.

Several other buildings in the town were also vandalized or razed.

*Community leaders speak out

In a press release signed by Hon. Dr. Saliu Omotosho, Chairman of the Ifon Community Development Association, and Hon. Olaniyi Eni-Olotu, the Publicity Secretary, the community expressed its deep sorrow and frustration over the events.

The statement reads: “On behalf of the good people of Ifon town, the Ifon Community Development Association wishes to express its displeasure over the questionable circumstances that led to the untimely death of Tolu Bobade and Bamise Orisamolade, both indigenes of Ifon town.”

The leaders condemned the actions of the police and called for a thorough investigation into the deaths and the subsequent destruction of property.

They also appealed to the families of the deceased and other aggrieved parties to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
