Malian cinema has lost one of its most distinguished pioneers

Souleymane Cissé passed away at the age of 84.

The iconic filmmaker was widely regarded as a trailblazer in African cinema.

He left behind a legacy that spanned over five decades.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that his daughter, Mariam Cissé, confirmed his death on Wednesday in Bamako.

She expressed the family’s shock and grief.

“Papa died today in Bamako,” she stated.

“We are all in shock,” she added.

“He dedicated all his life to his country, to cinema, and to art,” she continued.

Cissé’s contributions to cinema shaped the African film industry.

His works blended cultural storytelling with deep political and humanist themes.

Cissé gained international recognition with his 1987 film Yeelen (Brightness).

The film won the Jury’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

It was rooted in West African Bambara folklore.

The movie marked a historic moment in African cinema.

It became the first African film to receive such an honor at Cannes.

His dedication to cinema was reaffirmed in 2023.

He received the Carrosse d’Or at Cannes for his profound influence on filmmaking.

This award honors directors who have made a lasting impact on cinema.

In 2024, the award was stolen from his home.

It was later recovered.

Cissé’s impact on cinema extended beyond Cannes.

He was one of two directors to win FESPACO’s grand prize twice.

FESPACO is one of Africa’s most important cinema events.

His works have been lauded for their audacity and technical precision.

His influence extended to advocating for African cinema’s accessibility.

In a 2023 interview at Cannes, he addressed distribution challenges.

He lamented censorship and disregard from international markets.

“It is not enough to make cinema,” he asserted.

“The works must also be visible,” he added.

On the day of his death, he made a passionate plea.

He urged Mali’s military leaders to support cinema.

He called for building more theaters and making African films more accessible.

Cissé’s death has left the African film industry in mourning.

Fellow Malian director Boubacar Sidibé expressed his sorrow on social media.

He emphasized the void Cissé’s passing has created.

Minister of Culture Mamou Daffé described him as a “monument of African cinema.”

The Film at Lincoln Center also paid tribute to him.

They recognized his role in elevating African cinema to the world stage.

He was scheduled to leave for Burkina Faso on Thursday.

He was to preside over the 29th edition of FESPACO’s feature film jury.

His sudden passing marks a significant loss to global cinema.

His presence connected the present with a rich cultural history.

Born on April 21, 1940, Cissé dedicated his life to cinema.

He used cinema as a medium for political and social discourse.

His films tackled themes of colonialism, identity, and African heritage.

He earned recognition as one of the most important African filmmakers.

His works continue to be studied for their cinematic excellence.

They are celebrated for their cultural depth.

Cissé’s final words at a press conference underscored his commitment to cinema.

“May the authorities help us with the construction of cinemas,” he urged.
