The crème de la crème of Nigerian society gathered at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, for the book launch of IBB’s autobiography.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that the event, initially about literature, became a platform for massive fundraising and wealth display by Nigeria’s elite.

Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s (IBB) book, A Journey in Service, was the centerpiece of the occasion.

President Bola Tinubu, as the Special Guest of Honour, praised Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic and political landscape.

However, the shocking scale of donations turned the event into a showcase of privilege rather than a literary celebration.

Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, announced an N8 billion pledge to the IBB Presidential Library Project.

He committed to paying N2 billion annually for four years to fund the completion of the controversial project.

His pledge raised questions about priorities, as millions of Nigerians struggle with economic hardships and declining infrastructure.

Dangote promised to continue the annual donation beyond four years if the project remained unfinished.

Critics argue that such funds should be directed towards pressing issues like education, healthcare, and social welfare programs.

Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, Founder of BUA Group and Chief Launcher, pledged another N5 billion.

General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.), Co-Chief Launcher and Founder of TY Danjuma Foundation, donated an additional N3 billion.

The magnitude of these donations left many Nigerians questioning the sources and intentions behind such generosity.

While several donors preferred anonymity, the public nature of these pledges sparked widespread debates.

Many saw the donations as self-serving acts aimed at securing historical glorification for a former military ruler.

During his speech, Dangote credited Babangida with shaping Nigeria’s private sector through policy reforms.

He praised the former leader for abolishing import licenses, which he claimed boosted economic growth and industrial expansion.

Dangote argued that these reforms helped the private sector contribute 85 percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

However, critics believe Babangida’s economic policies enabled crony capitalism and concentrated wealth among a privileged few.

His Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) led to widespread poverty, job losses, and economic instability for ordinary Nigerians.

Despite being celebrated, Babangida’s administration remains one of the most controversial in Nigeria’s history.

An anonymous attendee at the launch described the event as an extravagant display of privilege and disconnection.

“Billions are being thrown at a library while millions of Nigerians lack access to basic necessities,” the attendee remarked.

Public outrage grew as critics highlighted the misplaced priorities of Nigeria’s billionaires and political elites.

Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu defended his N5 billion pledge, citing the importance of preserving historical records for future generations.

General Danjuma insisted the library would be a national treasure and vital to historical documentation.

Despite these justifications, many Nigerians saw the donations as misplaced extravagance amid national struggles.

Defenders of the event argued that preserving historical legacies is essential for future leadership and governance.

Others saw it as another example of the elite using philanthropy to whitewash controversial pasts.

The IBB Presidential Library, modeled after similar institutions globally, aims to archive Nigeria’s political history.

Yet, its necessity remains highly debated in a country with pressing socio-economic challenges.

While some believe such institutions provide valuable insight into leadership, others see them as unnecessary vanity projects.

At the book launch, applause for Babangida was as loud as the criticisms against his governance.

His supporters credited him for fostering economic liberalization, but detractors pointed to the severe consequences of his policies.

Many Nigerians still feel the effects of his administration’s structural reforms decades later.

The controversy surrounding the event revealed the stark divide between Nigeria’s ruling class and the common citizens.

While billions were pledged for a library, hospitals and schools across the nation remain underfunded and dilapidated.

Critics continue to ask whether these donations truly serve the public or merely protect elite interests.

The book launch, intended as a tribute, instead became a reflection of Nigeria’s deep socio-economic inequalities.

As Nigerians dissect the event, one question remains: should billionaires fund personal legacies or invest in national development?
