State of Emergency: Tinubu is biased, says Fubara

The Rivers State Government under the now-suspended Governor Siminalaye Fubara has expressed shock and disapproval over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the Fubara government accused President Tinubu of bias, questioning why Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a key figure in the state’s political crisis, was allowed to remain in office while Governor Fubara was removed.

Johnson described the declaration of a state of emergency and Fubara’s suspension as “unjust,” emphasizing that the governor had consistently upheld constitutional order, promoted peace, and prioritized good governance since assuming office.

“Since assuming office, Governor Fubara has focused on protecting lives and property, fostering progress, and maintaining stability in Rivers State, even amid political instability,” Johnson stated.

He further highlighted that the state government had acted in good faith by reinstating previously resigned commissioners and adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling following President Tinubu’s intervention to mediate peace.

Despite these efforts, Johnson accused lawmakers loyal to Wike of continuing to disrupt peace in the state.

He expressed shock that while Governor Fubara was removed, Wike, whom he described as a major actor in the crisis, remained unaffected.

“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor in this crisis,” Johnson remarked.

He called on residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and resilient, reaffirming its commitment to engaging with relevant institutions to safeguard democracy and ensure the state’s continued progress.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he added.

The government pledged to prioritize the well-being and prosperity of Rivers State citizens as it navigates the ongoing political situation.

*Reactions and implications

Critics argue that the move undermines democratic principles and could exacerbate the political crisis.

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, described the suspension as unconstitutional, while the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) chairman, Afam Osigwe, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the sacking of Governor Fubara violated constitutional provisions.

Also, the Senate Minority Caucus condemned the act describing it as an unfortunate development.

Abba Moro, the Minority Leader of the Senate, expressed personal sadness over the situation and questioned the constitutionality of the state of emergency declaration.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also condemned the move, calling it an “assault on democracy”.

Atiku accused President Tinubu of undoing years of peace in the Niger Delta region and sparking violent unrest and instability.

Defence Minister backs Tinubu

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has expressed strong support for President Tinubu’s declaration.

Matawalle stated that this decisive action is vital for restoring stability to the state’s turbulent political landscape.

Matawalle highlighted the unfortunate demolition of the House of Assembly by the state governor, which has left the state without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months.

The minister also noted the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which reaffirmed the constitutional necessity of a functioning legislature and condemned the governor’s actions as unconstitutional.

Matawalle further expressed concern over recent reports of vandalism and threats from militants, underscoring the need for a unified effort to restore peace and security.

He reiterated that the Federal Government is committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens and the protection of vital infrastructure in Rivers State.
