A former member of the United States Congress, Mia Love, has died at the age of 49 after a battle with brain cancer.

Love, who made history as the first black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, passed away peacefully at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah, on Sunday, March 23, 2024.

Her family, in a statement, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, he said:

“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully. We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers, and condolences.”

Political Career

Love’s political journey began in 2003 when she won a seat on the Saratoga Springs City Council.

She later became the city’s mayor before making a bid for Congress in 2012.

Though she lost her first attempt, she made a comeback in 2014 and secured victory, defying critics who doubted a Black, Republican, and Mormon woman could win in a predominantly white state.

During her tenure in office, Love was seen as a rising star in the Republican Party.

Final Message of Unity

In an op-ed published earlier this month, Love reflected on her belief in the American dream, recalling how her parents migrated to the U.S. with just $10 in their pockets.

She lamented the growing division in the country and urged Americans to focus on unity rather than differences.

“Some have forgotten the math of America—whenever you divide, you diminish,” she wrote, calling on political leaders to lead with compassion and integrity.

Life After Congress

After losing her seat in 2018 to Democrat Ben McAdams, Love transitioned into media, serving as a political commentator on CNN and later as a fellow at the University of Sydney.

Despite her exit from active politics, she continued to speak on national issues and remained hopeful about the country’s future.

“In the end, I hope that my life will have mattered and made a difference for the nation I love and the family and friends I adore,” she wrote in her final public message.

Love is survived by her husband and children.
