The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Carter Centre, has provided free hydrocelectomy surgeries to 165 patients across the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the surgical procedures, which commenced on March 18, were carried out at three general hospitals—Enugwu-Ukwu, Umueri, and Ekwulobia.

Hydrocelectomy is a surgical operation to remove a hydrocele, a fluid-filled sac in the scrotum.

The condition, which often leads to swelling and discomfort, can affect daily activities and quality of life.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, disclosed that the initiative was designed to assist patients, particularly those in remote communities, who suffer from hydrocele.

He noted that all surgeries were successful, with no recorded complications.

Obidike commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Carter Centre for supporting the initiative, describing it as a life-changing opportunity for the people of Anambra.

“This programme highlights the expertise of healthcare workers in the state and demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the health sector and addressing pressing medical conditions,” he said.

Dr Chinenye Obi, Chief Medical Officer at Umueri General Hospital, also lauded the initiative, stating that the hospital was well-equipped for the surgeries.

She confirmed that no casualties had been recorded since the programme began.

A beneficiary, Mr Somadina Nzegwu from Umuoba-Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area, expressed his gratitude to the state government and the Carter Centre for the free surgery.

“I spent over N380,000 on a similar procedure three years ago, but it reoccurred.

This time, I couldn’t afford the surgery, so I’m grateful to the government for coming to my aid,” Nzegwu said.
