Zazzau Emirate cracks down on district heads with government ties

The Zazzau Emirate has banned district heads from holding dual positions in government and traditional leadership.

His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, announced this decision on Tuesday morning.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, he made the statement during a Sallah homage visit by district heads of the emirate.

The Kaduna State Government ecently issued a directive affecting district heads who also work in government agencies.

Under the new rule, these officials must choose between retaining their traditional title or resigning from their government position.

The Emir emphasized that failure to comply would result in disciplinary actions.

This includes repaying previously received government salaries obtained while holding both positions.

The policy aims to ensure that district heads focus entirely on their traditional responsibilities.

The Emir also urged district heads and village chiefs to remain vigilat regarding security issues.

He acknowledged a decline in security challenges in some areas of Kaduna State.

This improvement is due to the government’s peace negotiations with bandits in affected regions.

However, he stressed that continuous monitoring of community affairs remains necessary.

Governor Malam Uba Sani, represented by the Jarman Zazzau, issued another warning.

He cautioned district heads against unauthorized allocation of government lands.

The government will no longer tolerate such practices within the emirate.

The meeting was attended by approximately 80 district heads from the Zazzau Emirate.

Other prominent figures from the region also participated in the discussions.

The Zazzau Emirate is one of the oldest emirates in northern Nigeria.

It is located in present-day Kaduna State and has historical roots dating back to the 15th century.

Zazzau was originally one of the seven Hausa city-states that thrived in pre-colonial Nigeria.

The emirate became a center of trade, governance, and Islamic scholarship in the region.

In the 19th century, it joined the Sokoto Caliphate after Usman Dan Fodio’s Jihad.

During British colonial rule, Zazzau’s leadership was incorporated into the indirect rule system.

Today, the emirate continues to play a significant role in governance and cultural preservation.

The Emir remains a custodian of tradition, mediating conflicts and overseeing social development.
