The University of Ibadan has rejected a proposal to rename Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall to Akintola Hall.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, the university emphasized that naming decisions are based on historical recognition rather than ethnic considerations.

A social media discussion initiated the proposal to change the hall’s name.

A Twitter user, @akobi_ayo, questioned the continued use of the name “Zik-Hall.”

He expressed concerns over young Yoruba men being called “Zikites.”

He suggested renaming the hall after Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a former Premier of the Western Region.

He argued that Yoruba students should not be associated with Nnamdi Azikiwe’s legacy.

He stated that Akintola was a more culturally appropriate figure for the hall’s name.

The university swiftly responded to the proposal.

The administration clarified that facility names honor historical contributions to national development rather than ethnic sentiments.

In an official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to unity and academic excellence.

The university stated that it values all students equally.

It emphasized that its legacy promotes inclusivity.

Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall is one of the oldest halls at the University of Ibadan.

Azikiwe made significant contributions to higher education in Nigeria.

Zik Hall has a tradition of producing politically and intellectually active students.

Students residing in the hall proudly call themselves “Zikites.”

The proposal to rename the hall sparked widespread debate on social media.
