Putin declines to defend Iran in event of US attack

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko has confirmed that President Vladimir Putin will not intervene to protect Iran if the United States begins bombing the country.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), this statement comes amid rising tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the increasing likelihood of military conflict in the Middle East.

Rudenko’s comments follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent call for a “Libya-style” solution regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, where discussions focused on the escalating situation in the region.

During their meeting, Trump announced that direct talks between Washington and Tehran would begin on Saturday.

Trump also warned that if diplomacy fails, Iran would face serious consequences and would not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.

Despite Russia’s close military and political relationship with Iran, Rudenko emphasized that Moscow has no obligation to defend Tehran in the event of a US attack.

Although Russia and Iran signed a strategic partnership treaty in January, which aimed to deepen military and political ties between the two nations, Rudenko clarified that this agreement does not create a military alliance.

Therefore, Russia is not bound by any legal obligation to provide military assistance if a conflict arises between the US and Iran.

“We aim to avoid conflict between Iran and the US at all costs due to the potentially catastrophic consequences for the region,” Rudenko stated.

He also stressed that while Russia would take all necessary actions to protect its interests, military intervention is not part of the strategic partnership with Iran.

These remarks indicate that Russia is cautious about becoming embroiled in military conflicts in the Middle East, despite its close relationship with Tehran.

Rudenko’s comments come ahead of high-level indirect talks scheduled between the US and Iran on Saturday in Oman.

These talks are seen as a crucial opportunity for diplomacy, offering both nations a chance to de-escalate tensions.

Russia has repeatedly expressed its desire for a peaceful resolution to the standoff but has distanced itself from direct military involvement in the conflict.
