Opposition selfishness risks Nigeria’s democratic survival — NPYM
DDM News

The Nigeria Political Youth Movement (NPYM) has issued a strong call for unity among opposition politicians, warning that selfish interests and disunity threaten the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered in a press statement released on Tuesday, the movement expressed deep concern over the worsening state of governance under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group warned that unless opposition forces act with urgency and sincerity, Nigerians could continue to suffer under what it described as a “disguised dictatorship.”
The NPYM observed that political activities in recent months have intensified, especially as the 2027 general elections draw near.
According to the group, political gladiators are currently engaging in alignments, realignments, consultations, and negotiations, both in public and behind closed doors.
However, the movement said all these efforts would remain meaningless if opposition players continue to prioritize personal ambition over national interest.
The statement signed by Comrade Fredrick Odoh, the National Media and Publicity Secretary of NPYM.
He said that Nigeria is passing through one of the darkest and most difficult phases in its history.
Odoh added that the country’s democratic system has been deeply eroded by poor leadership, repression, and anti-people policies.
The youth-led political advocacy group called on politicians of conscience to set aside their differences and urgently work together toward saving Nigeria.
The NPYM stressed that time is running out and that good people must rise now or risk losing the country entirely.
The movement described the current administration as a “tormentor” of Nigerians, accusing it of plunging the country into unprecedented hardship.
It lamented the rising cost of living, insecurity, and economic stagnation, stating that the government has failed in its responsibilities to the people.
The group emphasized that the suffering of ordinary Nigerians has reached a breaking point and that political leaders cannot continue to pretend otherwise.
“Even the blind and the deaf know that Nigeria and Nigerians are going through perhaps their worst experience under this current government,” Odoh stated.
He argued that if nothing is done, Nigeria’s democracy could be permanently damaged, and authoritarianism may take root under the guise of democratic rule.
The group cited the popular saying that “evil only thrives when good people do nothing” to urge opposition parties to stop waiting and start acting.
The NPYM declared that what Nigeria urgently needs is a coalition of truly patriotic politicians who are committed to rescuing the country.
Odoh warned that if opposition leaders fail to unite now, history would remember them not for their political careers but for their silence during national collapse.
He called on political parties, pressure groups, and stakeholders in the opposition space to begin genuine talks on forming a united front.
The NPYM said it would throw its full weight behind any alliance that places the people above personal gain and power-sharing arrangements.
The movement, however, cautioned against opportunistic alliances that only exist to grab power without clear solutions for the country’s problems.
It urged opposition parties to develop a collective vision rooted in integrity, good governance, and the welfare of Nigerians.
The group believes that only a sincere and well-organized opposition movement can remove the current government through democratic means in 2027.
According to Odoh, the Nigerian people are angry, frustrated, and desperate for change, and they need a credible alternative they can believe in.
He noted that young Nigerians, in particular, are disillusioned by politics and will not support any coalition that lacks clarity, direction, or compassion.
The statement reaffirmed NPYM’s commitment to promoting political consciousness among the youth and pushing for real reforms in governance.
The group said it would continue to speak out boldly against any policies or leaders that endanger the future of the country.
It called on all opposition forces to prove that they are different from those currently in power by leading with transparency and patriotism.
NPYM concluded its statement with a passionate appeal to political gladiators to rise beyond ego, unite with purpose, and rescue Nigeria from total collapse.
It warned that any further delay could result in irreversible consequences for the nation’s unity, peace, and democratic future.
The group emphasized that there is no better time than now for action, cooperation, and sacrifice.
It insisted that Nigeria belongs to every citizen and that the responsibility of saving it rests on everyone, especially those with influence and political power.
