Captain Kamal

A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Captain Kamal, has been confirmed as one of the victims of a deadly ambush carried out by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the tragic incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday at Izge, a remote farming community in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.

The Emir of Gwoza, Mohammed Shehu Timta, confirmed the attack and revealed that Captain Kamal was among those who lost their lives during the encounter with the terrorists.

According to the Emir, the attack occurred around 1:00 am, when heavily armed insurgents stormed the community, firing sporadically in a bid to cause maximum damage and panic.

The Nigerian Army, supported by local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), responded swiftly to repel the assault.

Despite their efforts, Captain Kamal and another unnamed soldier were fatally shot in the crossfire.

Security operatives, however, succeeded in neutralizing three of the attackers during the gun battle.

They also recovered several items from the terrorists, including motorcycles, bicycles, a vehicle used for operations, and a high-grade rifle.

The incident has drawn fresh attention to the increasing toll of Nigeria’s long-standing war against terrorism in the North East.

A recent report by SBM Intelligence revealed that no fewer than 2,000 people were killed in violent incidents across Nigeria between January and March 2025.

Out of that number, 136 were members of security agencies.

Borno State topped the casualty chart with 515 deaths, followed by Zamfara with 408, Katsina with 155, Benue with 101, and Niger with 68.

Other states affected include Anambra (63 deaths), Edo (60), Ondo (59), and Kaduna (58).

The report further broke down the fatalities to include 892 civilians, 462 bandits, 119 vigilantes, 234 Boko Haram members, 42 kidnappers, and 66 cultists.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has repeatedly raised concerns over the unrelenting security challenges in the region.

While commending the efforts of the Nigerian military, he has emphasized the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in tackling insurgency.

According to the governor, Borno has received over 300,000 repentant Boko Haram members within the last three years.

He clarified that not all of them were fighters, as some were farmers coerced into the group.

The Boko Haram insurgency, which began in earnest around 2009, has left a devastating mark on Nigeria, particularly in the North East.

Despite claims of “technical defeat” by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the group continues to launch deadly attacks on both military and civilian targets.

Over the years, the conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people.

Entire communities have been destroyed, forcing survivors into overcrowded internally displaced persons (IDP) camps that lack basic services such as food, clean water, healthcare, and security.

The emergence of Boko Haram offshoots, particularly the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has made the insurgency even more difficult to combat.

These factions have expanded their operations across the Lake Chad region, undermining national security and prolonging the cycle of violence.

Despite the presence of multinational forces and international support, Nigeria continues to grapple with restoring peace in the troubled region.

The death of Captain Kamal serves as a grim reminder of the high price paid by security personnel in the effort to secure the country.
