IPOB declares May 30 lockdown across southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared May 30, 2025, as a total lockdown in Southeast Nigeria.

This was made known in a statement issued on Monday 12 may,2025,by the IPOB spokesperson, Mr. Emma Powerful.

Powerful said the lockdown is in remembrance of fallen Biafra heroes and heroines.

He added that the day would serve as a memorial for those who died for Biafra’s liberation.

According to him, the day would also be observed as a public holiday across the region.

The statement urged residents to observe the sit-at-home order without fail.

“All Biafrans are to stay indoors throughout May 30,” the statement noted.

IPOB described the day as “Biafra Heroes Memorial Day” across the land.

It said this year’s event would be observed just like previous years with full respect.

It said awareness for the event had started since May 1, 2025.

Radio Biafra has started special broadcasts ahead of the Heroes Day celebration.

The IPOB media team is also promoting the memorial across online platforms.

The group said lectures and events would hold to honour Biafra martyrs.

“These activities are scheduled both in Nigeria and abroad,” the group noted.

The main event will climax with the May 30 total lockdown.

IPOB said May 30 would be set aside every year to honour Biafra’s departed.

It warned that no resident should defy the stay-at-home directive.

Powerful said the Nigerian security forces may use the day to harm innocent civilians.

He claimed that the police and army usually use such opportunities to provoke violence.

“We don’t want loss of lives on that day,” he warned.

He advised residents to remain indoors and avoid the streets on that day.

“Whoever ignores this order will bear the consequences alone,” he stressed.

Powerful said IPOB values the lives of Biafrans and seeks to protect them.

He accused Nigerian forces of targeting IPOB members without provocation.

He urged residents to observe the day with solemnity and discipline.

Transporters were warned not to operate any vehicles on May 30.

“All commercial activities must be suspended throughout Biafra Land,” IPOB declared.

Shops, markets, and offices are expected to shut down for the day.

The group said the lockdown is not meant to punish but to remember.

They insisted that the fallen heroes must never be forgotten.

Powerful reaffirmed that the event is part of IPOB’s tradition.

He said the lockdown helps to unite Biafrans in remembrance.

He thanked those who have continued to support the memorial annually.

The IPOB spokesperson maintained that the May 30 date is non-negotiable.

He called for total compliance from all residents of the Southeast region.
