Just in: Former Bayelsa military administrator, Navy captain, dies at 70

Former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, Navy Captain Omoniyi Caleb Olubolade (rtd), has passed away at the age of 70.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the retired naval officer died on Sunday, May 11, 2025, after collapsing during a game of lawn tennis in Apapa, Lagos.

According to a statement jointly signed by his first daughter, Oluwayemisi Akinadewo, and his first son, Dayo Olubolade, the late officer had driven himself to a sports facility that evening for a routine tennis session.

While playing on the court, he reportedly slumped unexpectedly, prompting immediate intervention from medical personnel who were present at the facility.

Despite their prompt efforts to revive him, he did not respond.

He was rushed to the Obisesan Naval Medical Hospital in Apapa, where he was officially declared dead by medical staff.

Navy Captain Olubolade had only recently celebrated his 70th birthday on November 30, 2024. His death has come as a shock to many, especially those who knew him as an active and energetic individual.

Born in Ipoti-Ekiti, Ekiti State, in 1954, Olubolade began his career in the Nigerian Navy, where he steadily rose through the ranks through diligence, discipline, and commitment to national duty.

He was appointed the Military Administrator of Bayelsa State from 1997 to 1998 under the regime of General Sani Abacha.

His administration played a significant role in the early development of the young state, which had only been carved out of Rivers State a year earlier.

Beyond his military service, Olubolade ventured into politics and was appointed Minister of Special Duties.

He also served as Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory and later as Minister of Police Affairs during the presidency of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Throughout his public service career, he was known for his dedication, integrity, and passion for national development.

Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, military officers, and citizens who remember him as a patriotic Nigerian with an unwavering commitment to duty.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days, as Nigerians mourn the loss of a respected leader and elder statesman.
