Police investigate fire at Starmer's London residence

Fire reportedly occurred at Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s residence in north London in the early hours of Monday, May 12, 2025.

According to the BBC, Counter-terrorism officers are now involved in the investigation of a fire.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident caused damage to the front entrance of the property, but there were no injuries reported.

A police cordon remains in place around the residence, which is located in the Kentish Town area.

Although Sir Keir currently lives at the official prime ministerial residence in Downing Street, it is understood that he still owns the Kentish Town home, which is currently being rented out to tenants.

Sir Keir has publicly expressed gratitude to emergency services for their prompt response and actions, according to his official spokesperson.

However, the spokesperson emphasized that this is an ongoing investigation and declined to offer further comment.

When asked whether any of the prime minister’s family members were inside the home at the time of the fire, the spokesman refused to confirm or deny, citing the active nature of the inquiry.

The London Fire Brigade provided further details, stating that it had been alerted to a “small fire” at 1:11 a.m. BST on Monday morning.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within approximately 20 minutes.

Specifically, two fire engines were dispatched from the nearby Kentish Town Fire Station to handle the situation.

In total, around ten firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fire and securing the scene.

In a statement, the police confirmed:

“Officers attended the scene.

“Damage was caused to the property’s entrance.

“Nobody was hurt.

“The fire is being investigated and cordons remain in place while enquiries continue.”

Throughout the day on Monday, both police officers and fire investigators could be seen outside the property conducting a thorough examination of the scene.

At one point, a section of the street was sealed off to vehicles to facilitate the investigation, indicating the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the incident.

This property has previously been the site of public protest.

In a notable incident last year, a group of demonstrators staged a pro-Palestinian protest outside the same house.

Three individuals involved in that demonstration were later convicted of public order offences.

The involvement of counter-terrorism police in the current inquiry suggests that authorities are exploring all possible motives and security implications surrounding the fire.

While no evidence has yet been made public to indicate whether the fire was accidental or deliberate, the heightened attention from specialized police units underlines a strong commitment to uncovering the facts.

Neither the prime minister nor any official source has confirmed the specific nature of the fire or whether any potential threats had been made prior to the incident.

Nevertheless, the deployment of specialized investigative units and continued police presence at the scene indicate that multiple scenarios are being explored.

So far, no arrests have been made, and investigators are continuing to collect evidence and conduct interviews in the area.

The investigation remains in its early stages, and authorities are expected to provide updates once more information is verified.

The Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade continue to work together closely as part of this multi-agency investigation.

Residents of the area have been advised to remain alert but reassured that there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time.

As the inquiry progresses, questions remain about the motive behind the fire and whether it may be linked to Sir Keir Starmer’s political role, his past connection to the property, or the earlier protest outside the same home.

Officials have not confirmed any direct link between those previous events and the current incident.

The prime minister’s office has reiterated that the incident is under active investigation and has asked for public patience while law enforcement completes its work.

For now, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the investigation.
