Ijaw congress warns Rivers crisis threatens Niger Delta peace

Tensions in Rivers State have escalated as the Ijaw National Congress (INC) publicly declared that its loyalty lies with the people of Rivers State, not with any individual politician.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that this position follows recent statements made by Governor Siminalayi Fubara during his ongoing conflict with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released on March 4, 2025, INC President, Professor Benjamin Okaba, warned that the current political crisis could destabilize not only Rivers State but the entire Niger Delta.

He emphasized that the INC remains committed to protecting the welfare and interests of the people, not serving the agenda of any political figure.

Professor Okaba cautioned that efforts to weaken or destabilize Governor Fubara’s administration could spark unrest in a region that is central to Nigeria’s oil production and economic stability.

He reminded all stakeholders of the vital contributions made by the Ijaw people toward the development and governance of Rivers State.

According to Okaba, any attempt to marginalize the Ijaw community will be met with resistance and could lead to severe consequences for national unity.

The INC reiterated the need for inclusive governance and respect for all ethnic groups within Rivers State.

Professor Okaba urged political actors to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than promote actions that threaten the peace of the region.

The longstanding tensions between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike date back to late 2023, following a bitter power struggle over political control and loyalty.

Despite interventions, the crisis has persisted, creating a leadership divide and disrupting governance.

The INC’s warning is being interpreted as a firm message that the Ijaw people will not tolerate political victimization or exclusion from the affairs of their own state.

The organization called on both state and federal authorities to act swiftly and fairly in resolving the impasse before it escalates further.

Professor Okaba concluded by reaffirming that the Ijaw National Congress will continue to advocate for peace, justice, and development but will never be a tool in the hands of politicians.
