Senate thrashes Ibn Na’allah’s anti-social media bill

UPDATE

Saraki Applauds Withdrawal of Social Media Bill by Senate

Following the 8th Senate’s decision to step down the Frivolous Petition Bill, based on a recommendation from the Senate Committee on Human Rights and Legal Matters submitted by Senator David Umar on Tuesday, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, commended the Upper Legislative Chamber’s moves.

Recall that in February, speaking at the Social Media Week, Lagos, Game Changers event, Saraki stated that the bill brought to the floor by Senate Deputy Leader, Sen. Bala Ibn Naallah, would not scale through the Senate, based on the public outcry that had accompanied the revelation of several of its proposed sections.

Commenting on his Twitter handle on Tuesday, Saraki stated that he was “Glad to see that as promised during social media week, [the] Frivolous Petitions Bill has been officially stepped down.”

Since its inception on June 9th, 2015, the 8th Senate has worked to institute a people-oriented legislature that is responsive to the demands of Nigerians, and addresses their complaints through thorough and effective oversight and lawmaking.

Senate on Tuesday unanimously threw away the anti-social media bill sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn Na’allah.

The bill, entitled “Act to Prohibit Frivolous Petitions” is in effect designed to protect looters in high places, notoriously the Senate, which is loaded with persons of questionable character.
