Trump warns Elon Musk of ‘serious consequences’ for backing Democrats

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Elon Musk on Saturday, June 7, 2025, cautioning the billionaire entrepreneur against financially supporting Democratic candidates.
The threat follows a high-profile public fallout between the two figures, which has escalated over the past week.
In a forthcoming interview with NBC News, Trump made it clear that his relationship with Musk had effectively ended.
The former president expressed anger over Musk’s recent criticism of the Republican-backed budget bill, officially named the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
Musk had referred to the legislation as an “abomination,” igniting tensions with Republican leaders and Trump himself.
Trump alleged that Musk, who reportedly spent nearly $300 million backing Trump’s re-election campaign last year, would face serious repercussions if he shifted his financial support to Democrats.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump told NBC’s Kristen Welker. “Very serious consequences.”
When asked if he was interested in reconciling with Musk, Trump replied flatly, “No.”
He confirmed he had no plans to speak with Musk again, saying, “I’m too busy doing other things. I have no intention of speaking to him.”
He went on to declare that their relationship was likely over: “I would assume so, yeah.”
Despite the feud, Trump suggested that the fallout had had a unifying effect on the Republican Party.
“The party has never been united like this before,” he claimed.
He added that the controversy had drawn more attention to the Republican agenda and ultimately helped highlight the strengths of the proposed budget bill.
The bill, which narrowly passed the House and now awaits Senate approval, includes provisions to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and boost spending on border security and the military.
However, it seeks to balance these increases with significant reductions in federal welfare programs, including Medicaid, food stamps, and green energy tax credits.
While Musk’s vocal opposition has influenced some conservative Republicans who share concerns about excessive government spending, Trump remained optimistic about the bill’s prospects.
He predicted that it would pass the Senate before July 4 and argued that Musk’s criticisms inadvertently helped rally support.
“I think, actually, Elon brought out the strengths of the bill,” Trump said.
“People that weren’t as focused started focusing on it, and they see how good it is. So in that sense, there was a big favor.”
Trump also took the opportunity to rebuke Musk for being “disrespectful to the office of the president.”
He said, “I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful.
“You could not disrespect the office of the president.”
The tension intensified earlier when Musk deleted a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter), the social media platform he owns.
The post had insinuated connections between Trump and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
When asked about the deleted post, Trump dismissed it as old and irrelevant: “That’s called ‘old news’. That’s been talked about for years.
Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it.”
Musk also recently backed down from a threat to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which is used by NASA to transport astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station.
The threat reportedly came in response to Trump hinting that he might cancel federal contracts with Musk’s companies.
However, Trump said on Saturday he hadn’t given the issue further consideration.
“I’d be allowed to do that,” he acknowledged, “but I haven’t given it any thought.”
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance commented on the dispute during an appearance on comedian Theo Von’s show.
Vance criticized Musk’s approach, describing the tech CEO as an “emotional guy” who had acted out of frustration.
“I hope that eventually Elon comes back into the fold.
Maybe that’s not possible now because he’s gone so nuclear,” Vance said.
Still, he downplayed the incident, adding, “It happens to everybody.
“I’ve flown off the handle way worse than Elon Musk did in the last 24 hours.”
“If Elon chilled out a little bit, everything would be fine,” he concluded, leaving the door open for a potential future reconciliation.
