Imo Police Arrest Three Suspects in Connection with Bank Robbery

The Imo State Police Command has announced the arrest of three suspects linked to a bank robbery that occurred at the Zenith Bank branch along Wetheral Road in Owerri.

The suspects, identified as Justice Ogbonna (also known as JJ), Turbine Charles, and Okechukwu Nwanebo (a.k.a. Modestus), were apprehended following an investigation into the robbery.

The robbery took place in February when a four-man gang of armed robbers trailed a bank customer to the Zenith Bank branch.

The hoodlums shot sporadically within the bank premises and exchanged gunfire with the three police personnel posted on duty.

Two police officers, Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko and Sergeant Sunday Agbo, lost their lives during the incident, while Sergeant Otu Athan sustained injuries. The robbers made off with N2.5 million .

The police investigation led to the arrest of the three suspects.

Further investigation revealed that one of the prime suspects, Chinonso Gift Onwuegbuchulam (popularly called ‘Ogolo’), was arrested in his hideout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, one year after the robbery.

During interrogation, Chinonso confessed to the crime and revealed that he received N400,000 from the stolen N2.8 million.

He also admitted to participating in several robbery operations in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Owerri between 2012 and 2017 .

Other suspects arrested in connection with the robbery include ; Elijah Chigemezu, 23, who was apprehended for snatching phones from unsuspecting victims at gunpoint.

A locally made gun was recovered from him.

John Chukwudi, 27, a member of the Black Axe confraternity cult group, who was arrested with a locally made pistol and five rounds of live cartridges.

Chibieze Tasie, 32, who was arrested for conspiring to snatch motorcycles from unsuspecting motorcyclists. N170,000 was recovered from him as part of the proceeds of his alleged criminal business.

The Imo State Police Command has demonstrated its commitment to tackling crime and ensuring justice.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, commended the operatives for their professionalism in achieving the operational feats and urged them to sustain the tempo in the onslaught against crime and criminality in the state DDM News gathered.
