Awka, Anambra – Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that tension has seized Oko town in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State after a Thursday-night attack linked to a suspected cult rivalry.

The Anambra State Police Command confirms two deaths, two injuries, and two abductions stemming from the 19 June 2025 violence.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Ikenga Tochukwu states that the shootings erupted around 8 : 40 p.m. at Total Junction and Tipper Junction.

Operatives led by the Aguata Area Commander, reinforced by the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and local vigilantes, quickly secured both scenes.

Eyewitnesses report that the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and a black Lexus RX 350 SUV with no licence plates.

At Total Junction the gunmen fired indiscriminately, injuring four people, including a young woman now receiving hospital care.

The attackers then moved to Tipper Junction, where they allegedly abducted two individuals before escaping.

Investigators have not yet released the identities of the victims.

Preliminary findings suggest the assault may be linked to ongoing cult rivalry among youths in the area.

Residents, unnerved by rising violence in the once-peaceful academic community, have urged authorities to intensify security patrols.

Police have appealed for calm, assuring the public that “strong leads” from eyewitnesses and on-scene evidence are guiding the manhunt.

Security forces remain on high alert across Oko and neighbouring communities to avert further bloodshed.

The incident adds to a disturbing pattern of cult-related clashes that have plagued several Anambra towns in recent months.

State officials reiterate their commitment to dismantling criminal gangs and restoring lasting peace to affected regions.

Community leaders call for concerted efforts, combining policing, youth engagement, and social programmes, to address the roots of the conflict.
