Extortion: Imo Police Commissioner arrests Rogue Officers

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, has taken decisive move to uphold discipline and restore professionalism within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, he apprehended seven officers accused of misconduct, extortion, and harassment of citizens during an unscheduled statewide inspection of police checkpoints.

The operation covered major routes including the Owerri–Onitsha, Owerri–Port Harcourt, and Owerri–Umuahia highways.

According to a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, the officers were caught engaging in various unprofessional acts, prompting immediate arrest and initiation of disciplinary procedures.

CP Danjuma’s inspection followed mounting public complaints of unethical behavior by personnel on field assignments.

During the inspection, he cautioned officers against acts that undermine public trust, such as extortion and illegal searches, emphasizing that offenders would be held fully accountable—including dismissal and possible prosecution.

The police chief also addressed motorists and commuters during the tour, urging them to resist illegal demands such as phone searches, which he described as unacceptable, unlawful, and a breach of citizens’ rights.

In a move to deepen public accountability, the Commissioner shared contact information for the Command’s Complaint Response Unit and X-Squad, encouraging the public to report any misconduct in confidence.

Meanwhile, the Command has commenced an intensive musketry and firearms handling training for over 200 officers across tactical units and divisions.

The refresher course, held at the Command Headquarters, aims to bolster operational discipline, weapon safety, and proper engagement rules.

The training, aligned with the reform agenda of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, was led by CSP Abdullahi Wase, Deputy Commander of 18 PMF, Owerri. Officers were trained on tactical shooting, close-quarter combat, lawful use of force, rifle maintenance, and the application of Force Order 237.

Top-ranking officers who attended the session included DCP Hammajoda Barka (Admin/Finance), ACP Michael Abattam, ACP Linus Nwaiwu (Owerri Metro), ACP Muhammad Gana (IGP X-Squad), ACP Danasumi Ibrahim (18 PMF), and ACP Dan Iruakazi (64 PMF, Orlu), among others.

CP Danjuma reaffirmed his commitment to building a modern, ethical police force guided by integrity, justice, and service to the people of Imo State.
