Trapped Under Fire: Gaza Civilians Caught Between Evacuation Orders And Bombardment

Israel bombards Eastern Gaza

Israel has intensified its military campaign in Gaza, particularly targeting eastern Gaza City, following an explicit order for Palestinians to evacuate the area.

This escalation comes amid ongoing efforts to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages held by the group, with regional and international actors attempting to broker a ceasefire.

On June 29, 2025, the Israeli military issued evacuation orders to residents in northern Gaza, including key districts of Gaza City and the Jabalia refugee camp.

Palestinians were instructed to leave these “combat zones” and move southwards towards safer areas such as Sheikh Radwan and Deir al-Balah al-Zawiya.

This directive was disseminated through leaflets dropped from aircraft, social media, text messages, and phone calls, urging civilians to use designated safe corridors to avoid harm during the intensifying military operations.

Despite the evacuation orders, a significant number of Palestinians remain in Gaza City.

Estimates suggest that around 250,000 people still reside there, with many unable or unwilling to leave.

According to reports, this is due to the dangers posed by the bombardments and the lack of viable shelter in the south.

The Palestinian Red Crescent has reported that some residents are trapped by the severity of the attacks, making evacuation impossible.

Following the evacuation notice, Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling escalated in the early hours, particularly in the Jabalia area, resulting in the destruction of multiple homes and the deaths of at least six civilians.

Additional strikes in southern Gaza, including Khan Younis, killed several more people, with a total of at least 23 fatalities reported on June 29 alone.

These attacks have targeted locations suspected to harbor Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters, as Israel seeks to weaken militant infrastructure, including underground tunnels used for military purposes.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have defended their operations by stating that prior to engaging militants, civilians were given safe corridors to evacuate.

The IDF claims to have neutralized numerous fighters in Gaza City’s Shejaiya district and dismantled critical Hamas infrastructure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated Israel’s readiness to negotiate a settlement, provided its key security conditions are met.

However, the evacuation orders and subsequent bombardments have drawn sharp criticism from international organizations.

The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned the directive for forcing civilians into overcrowded and under-resourced areas where military operations continue, exacerbating humanitarian conditions.

The UN has also highlighted the severe lack of infrastructure and limited access to humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip, where displaced populations are concentrated.

This latest escalation is part of a broader conflict that reignited in October 2023, following a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel.

Since then, Israel has conducted relentless air, land, and sea bombardments across Gaza.

These have been reportedly accompanied by a blockade that has severely restricted the flow of food, fuel, and medical supplies.

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, predominantly among Palestinian civilians, including women and children.

The mass evacuation orders echo a similar directive issued in October 2023, when Israel ordered over a million residents in northern Gaza to move south within 24 hours.

That order was widely condemned as impractical and dangerous.

There are reports of deadly incidents along evacuation routes and accusations that Hamas obstructed civilians’ movement.

Human Rights Watch has described such forced displacement as a form of collective punishment and a violation of international humanitarian law.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire have intensified, with Arab mediators, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States engaging in negotiations aimed at halting hostilities and securing hostage releases.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called for an end to the war and expressed hope for a ceasefire within a week.

However, Hamas leaders have accused Israel of using the bombing campaigns and forced displacements.

It says Israel uses them as leverage to influence negotiations, while Israel insists on maintaining stringent conditions for any settlement.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.

Continuous bombardments, coupled with the blockade and displacement, have devastated civilian life.

Medical facilities are overwhelmed, infrastructure is in ruins, and access to basic necessities is severely limited.

The international community continues to call for a diplomatic resolution to prevent further loss of life and to address the root causes of the conflict.

In summary, Israel’s recent bombardment of eastern Gaza City follows a strategic evacuation order aimed at clearing civilians from anticipated combat zones.

Israel frames these actions as necessary military measures against Hamas militants.

On the other hand, the operation has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement.

This has drawn international concern over the humanitarian impact.

Ongoing ceasefire negotiations underscore the urgent need for a sustainable political solution to this protracted and devastating conflict.
