‘Blackmail Tariffs’–Macron Blast Trump as Trade War Heats Up

French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly criticized global tariff policies.

Speaking on Monday, June 30, 2025, in Seville, Macron called some tariffs “instruments of blackmail.”

He made the remarks at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development.

Macron said powerful countries often use tariffs to pressure weaker nations.

“They are not used to balance trade,” he said. “They are used by the strongest to apply pressure.”

Macron urged world leaders to restore fairness to international trade.

He warned against trade wars and rising protectionism.

“Tariffs, barriers and trade wars are harmful,” he added.

The remarks came as the European Union negotiates a trade deal with the United States.

The deadline for the agreement is July 9, 2025.

Macron did not directly name the U.S. or President Donald Trump.

However, the speech followed Trump’s recent tariff proposals.

In April, Trump announced new tariffs on global imports.

They ranged between 10% and 50% on goods entering the U.S.

He later lowered some rates for 90 days after facing criticism.

Macron said these tariffs hurt developing economies the most.

He called their timing harmful during a fragile global recovery.

“It is an aberration,” he said. “Especially when aimed at nations starting economic growth.”

The United Nations trade agency also raised concerns in April.

It said the tariffs could devastate countries like Lesotho, Cambodia, and Madagascar.

Macron called for changes to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

He said the WTO must reflect modern goals, including equity and climate action.

“We must rethink global trade,” Macron stated.

He said trade rules must not ignore social justice or environmental issues.

Macron has long criticized Washington’s trade stance.

He also condemned asking Europe for more defense spending while imposing trade restrictions.

The Seville conference brings together leaders from across the globe.

They aim to discuss fairer financial policies and sustainable growth.

Macron’s speech received both praise and criticism from observers.

The conference will continue through the week in Seville, Spain.
