A recent survey conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API) revealed that a staggering 83% of Nigerians have little or no trust in President Bola Tinubu’s government.

This distrust is not limited to the executive branch, as 82% of respondents also expressed little or no trust in the National Assembly, and 79% in the judiciary.

Here’s a breakdown of the reasons behind this widespread distrust.

The Tinubu administration has been criticized for its economic policies, which have led to increased hardship for many Nigerians.

The removal of fuel subsidies without adequate measures to cushion the effects has had a negative impact on the economy.

The government has faced accusations of fraudulent practices, mismanagement, and lack of accountability, particularly in the controversies surrounding the 2025 budget and police recruitment process.

Many Nigerians feel that their leaders are more interested in personal gain than serving the public.

This perception has been fueled by the lavish lifestyle of political appointees and the awarding of profitable contracts to loyalists.

The administration has been accused of suppressing democratic rights, including the violent disruption of protests and the arrest of journalists and protesters.

The government’s inability to fulfill its campaign promises, such as providing constant electricity, has eroded trust in its ability to deliver on its agenda.

The survey’s findings have significant implications for governance in Nigeria.

The API’s Executive Director, Dr. Bell Ihua, described the situation as a “clear warning sign,” stating that the results indicate a growing democratic deficit.
