US to send more weapons to Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump on Monday, July 7, 2025, announced that his administration will resume and expand weapons shipments to Ukraine, reversing an earlier decision that had sparked criticism from both Kyiv and its allies.

The decision comes as Ukraine continues to endure heavy attacks from Russian forces, particularly in the central regions of the country.

Speaking to the press before a dinner meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, DC, Trump emphasized the importance of enabling Ukraine to defend itself.

“We’re going to send some more weapons.

“We have to.

“They have to be able to defend themselves,” the president said, noting the severity of the current situation.

“They are getting hit very hard now.”

According to Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, the renewed military support will consist largely of defensive weaponry.

Parnell explained that the United States remains committed to ensuring Ukraine can maintain its defenses, even as efforts continue to broker a lasting peace.

“We will be providing additional defensive weapons to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops,” Parnell said.

He further clarified that President Trump remains guided by an “America First” approach to foreign policy and military aid, and that all overseas shipments will be evaluated with U.S. national security interests in mind.

Trump’s announcement follows Russia’s declaration on Monday that it had successfully captured the village of Dachne in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.

The seizure of the village is part of a broader Russian campaign aimed at expanding control over central Ukrainian territories after months of intense combat.

The renewed pledge of military assistance comes just days after the Pentagon revealed that it was pausing the delivery of certain weapons systems to Ukraine.

Among the suspended items were air defense missiles and precision-guided artillery shells, equipment considered vital to Ukraine’s ongoing war effort.

The Pentagon cited concerns about dwindling stockpiles and the need to ensure adequate reserves for U.S. defense readiness as the reason for the halt.

The shift in policy appeared to have been influenced by a recent conversation between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Following their phone call on Friday, Zelenskyy shared on social media that both leaders had agreed on the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses.

“We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies,” Zelenskyy posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trump also offered a positive account of the call, describing it as “very good” and suggesting that the U.S. may soon authorize further sales of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine.

“They need them for defense.

“I don’t want to see people killed,” Trump told reporters during a briefing aboard Air Force One.

This latest development underscores the difficult balancing act the U.S. faces in its approach to the conflict.

While aiming to support an embattled ally, the Trump administration must also manage domestic military preparedness and navigate shifting global priorities.

The administration’s initial pause in weapons deliveries had triggered concerns in both Kyiv and Washington.

Critics argue that any delay in assistance could weaken Ukraine’s position on the battlefield and embolden Russian forces.

Analysts have suggested that continued U.S. support is not only crucial for Ukraine’s survival but also vital for maintaining credibility among American allies and deterring future aggression by hostile powers.

The renewed commitment to arms shipments signals a recognition of these stakes.

With Ukraine facing intensified assaults and Russia consolidating gains in key regions, the need for timely and effective military support has become increasingly urgent.

While details of the upcoming weapons packages remain under discussion, U.S. officials have indicated that bolstering air defense capabilities will be a top priority.

In the days ahead, attention will likely turn to how swiftly the new aid can be delivered and whether it will be sufficient to help Ukraine repel further Russian advances.

For now, Trump’s decision marks a significant step toward reaffirming American support for Ukraine in one of the most dangerous phases of the war.
